How do you prevent split ends with an afro?

So I've been wearing an afro for a while now... recently I had to straighten my hair to cut my split ends. I was shocked, I had to cut an inch off which isn't what I'm use to cutting. I've realized that wearing my hair in an afro causes way more split ends, because of not only friction, but tangled ends... So is there any way to prevent split ends while my hair is curly? Right now I'm using shea butter while my hair is straight.

sleep on a silk/satin pillow or wear a silk/satin head cap. Consider braids and other protective hairstyles. raw shea butter is good, also coconut oil. Go as long as you can without washing hair (or do water only rinse), comb daily with a wood or boar bristle brush to bring oils down from the scalp, also massage your scalp. Every now and then rinse with diluted vinegar to get rid of product build up.

Deep conditioning treatments really do wonder, you can get them really anywhere. I just got the loreal total repair 5 hair masque from there (before I was using coconut and Moroccan oils ones which work as well) and I just slept with it in with a shower cap on and i have no split ends, hair is growing pretty fast.
