For how long will I have to do crunches to get a strong core and a flatter stomach?

So my stomach is pretty flat, but I want to make it tighter. My friend, who is an athlete, says that I should do crunches, situps, and squats. My question is for how long a day and for what period of time? A few weeks? A month? A year? A picture of my body is my profile picture because of another question that I have asked, if it helps.
