What's the best way to get a 6-pack?

So i worked out a lot last summer, but hardly got any progress. I can't really figure out why, i thought it might of been because i was doing the exercises wrong, but really, i have no idea. And what most people say is that the best way to get buff is by going to the gym, but im 14, and the gym is only open to people over 16. So i have no clue on how to get lean, anyone got any ideas?
