What types of food do you eat that are uncommon?

I was chatting with an old American lady who was born in Louisiana and I said that I have heard that the Southern states of the US are known for making great food.

She said that they do a lot of fishing and hunting there and told me that they eat turtles, alligators, squirrels (!), doves and more. I was like O_O because we don't eat such food in my country.

So, what types of food do you eat that are uncommon? What do they taste like?

And have you ever tried allegators, turtles, squirrels and doves? What do they taste like?

Ooookay, where to begin:

Alligator-tastes like chicken,

Ostrich- really strong beef

Bison- " "

Venison- gamey beef

Frogs legs-chicken

Sushi/sashimi <3

Veal

Scorpion lollipop-not impressed like crunchy, tasteless soft shell crab

Soft Shell Crab <333

Steak Tartare- Wasn't too fond of the egg.

Organs. Liver, Kidneys, heart, sweet breads..Testicle(yumm :P)

Bone Marrow, again yumm

Ducks tongue- tastes like chicken wings, very good in barbecue sauce

Curried Goat- like strong lamb

Sea Urchin-nice though very fishy taste but one weird ass texture

Tripe soup-which was the most disgusting thing I have EVER put in my mouth. Damn my brother and his lies!

Scrapple meat- Pennsylvania dutch specialty which is like the bits of a pig not good enough to put in to sausages, with corn meal and fried. It's nice though.

Haggis! Yum

Black Pudding. Also Yum!

Snail Porridge- thank you Heston Blumenthal (very weird)

Bacon and Egg Ice cream (also very weird, but oddly satisfying)

Pickled Lemons, walnuts, onions and eggs- Gross Gross Gross and GROSS

Pigeon

Quail

Pheasant

Kangaroo-unless I was being lied to and it tastes like gamey beef

Partridge (without the pear tree)

Squid YUUUUMMM

Octopus YUUUUMM

Shark -which I hate

Swordfish-which is quite nice

Ice Cream and Pretzals-OMG YUMMM or Ice cream and french fries...yummmmmy

Horse-tastes like beef

There are few things I won't eat or at least try once, these things include:

Shark Finn soup-it's a barbaric practice and I will not support it

Cats or Dogs- it's a fact that they will steal peoples' beloved animals for meat

Guinea Pig-reminds me of Fluffy, so I won't be eating that any time soon

Whale or Dolphin-just NO

Tiger-NO

Monkey- in any form

Basically any endangered animal is a big NO

Any animal that is still ALIVE. No, never. NO

Oh and there's some weird soup made from human saliva, the name of which escapes me, but the idea makes me gag so I guess not.

I've TRIED some weird Aussie stuff, but only on dares. I'm quite prudent when it comes to meat, though. I pretty much only eat cow, chicken, seafood and sometimes bacon, and even then not weird parts of the animal. *shrugs* I have an odd mentality.

I guess there are some Sri Lankan foods I eat that may be uncommon:

Kiribath: milk rice. It's a breakfast thing and you can eat it with side dishes. I kinda just cover it in sugar :P It's awesome

Acharu: pretty much chilli mixed with fruit. Awesome with mangoes, apples and pineapple :)

Kottu: rotti (Sri Lankan flatbread) shredded, mixed with vegies and meat, and with tasty gravy stuff poured over it

But yeah. Most food I eat isn't too weird, it's just different :)

I'm Chinese, born and raised, so I've eaten some pretty squeamish things (according to pansy ass western standards).

- Cat

- Dog

- Alligator

- Scorpion

- Snake

- Turtle

- Scorpions

- Eels

- Rabbit

- Shark (fin)

- Pigeon

- Guts and innards of various animals (large pig intestines are my favorite)

- Fermented Tofu

Just in case anyone was wondering, dog tastes like lamb, very gamey, and a thousand times more tender. However, if it's not prepared properly there is a lingering smell that would permeate the dish. Needs to be cooked very specifically to get rid of it.

Most unusual things I've eaten here in Vancouver:

-Sea asparagus link (local coastal plant)

-Geoduck link (burrowing bivalve (shellfish) from the Pacific Northwest)

-Sand Whiting link (fish from the eastern seaboard of Australia)

-Gizzard Shad link (fish from eastern North America)

-Shark (not sure which kind; had it a couple times a long time ago, and it was good)

-Bison and venison (had a venison casserole at The Baskerville Arms in Shiplake, England Dec 2009 that was without question one of the best meals I've ever had in my life)

I have eaten alligator. It is actually really good. I know people say this a lot, but it tastes like chicken. It is just slightly chewier. It is best served fried in my opinion. It is common here in Florida to eat alligator. I haven't eaten any of the other things you listed. My dad has eaten frog legs. I always thought that sounded gross. He swears it is delicious.

I don't know what country you are from, but to Americans eating things like black pudding and scotch eggs is considered strange. I tried black pudding when I was living in Liverpool and almost threw up from one bite.

I've had crocodile, kangaroo, llama, and pigeon. But I don't eat them all the time. One thing I do eat frequently that may be uncommon is pickled herring. I love that stuff and it is always something we have at family get-togethers.

Alligator meat is taaaasty.  Never had turtle or squirrel or dove.  I've also tried Octopus and Eel.  Didn't much care for them.  But Alligator is MMM good.  It wasn't all THAT uncommon in South Florida (where I grew up).

Alligators yeah, but turtles and squirrels? No. Not even doves. Doves are mainly just hunted for sport.

I've had alligator and squid and duck. Also lamb chops. That's about as exotic as it goes for me. I barely even eat meat.

i've eaten snake,a mouse, frogs and grasshoppers. in my country, we have a dish called"dinuguan"..it's made with pig's blood. and yeah..guts and innards of pigs and chicken..
