India doesn't focus on the Olympics as much as Asia or Western countries. They seem to be more intellectual and spiritual than athletic. Not trying to be racist. Plus, I've heard that it wasn't considered "manly" to be in good shape in India. My mate said they have a "bigger is better" mentality. Perhaps that's a fraction of the reason as well.

India lacks the infrastructure for sports. The US has only 3 mil but the infrastructure is so good that they bring many athletes to the Olympics. Many athletes from other countries train in the US and compete for their nationality.
I think it's because Indians tend to strive for academic success over athletic success, simply because that's the cultural norm and most of them think that way. I mean, a lot of them would be proud to have great Indian athletes competing in the olympics, but who's gonna do it if most of them want to do well academically right?
I don't think India puts a high emphasis on sports like Western countries do. Even in their schools, they barely invest much in extracurriculars, it's all about math, science, engineering, etc. Kind of a smart move, in my opinion :P

India is smart. They have realistic expectations and therefore take up fields that will give them an edge in modern society. Medicine, technology, and engineering. You have better odds at becoming an engineer or a surgeon than you do at winning Olympic gold. If you succeed in the former, you're set for life.
India is not known for its athleticism. They care more about being smart than athletic. India is probably doing the accounting for the whole event LOL.
