When he's out, it's like I don't exist.

I am in a LDR with a guy. It's only been three months so far. In the beginning, he used to message me all the time when he was out; took pictures to let me sort of take part, and sent messages as well. But this has all changed. He now simply disappears for hours. Today he told me he'd have a work dinner. It's after midnight now, and I haven't heard from him. He doesn't even check the messages I sent in the past five hours (we use an app that let's you see if your messages have been seen). He knows it annoys me when he does that. I don't expect him to have a conversation with me while he is out, but letting me know if there's any point in staying up as we originally agreed to talk tonight would be nice.

I've tried talking to him about it, obviously it didn't work. I don't want to control him, but this drastic change from sending pictures to not even opening my messages is a bit suspicious. Should I just ignore him right back, to show him how annoying it is? I really don't want to overreact here or be childish but one of the reasons why I agreed to commit to him was that he was so thoughtful, but that seems to have gone out of the window for no apparent reason at all.
