We are on a break and I said to him if he meets someone in a few weeks time and he's giving that a chance can he please let me know

His response was "I doubt it will be that quick, I am not in a mood anyway, it was mainly a mental thing and if you do the same for you please let me know"

Lol, there’s no such thing as a break in a relationship. You’re either over or your not. It’s completely counterproductive and useless to say there’s a break anyway when you still talk to each other and emotionally reserve yourself for him. Like that makes zero sense what you’re doing rn.

The key point in there is “he said if anything serious happens he will be there for me”. From my perspective this is what someone says when they genuinely care about your well-being. For instance, I recently cut ties with my best friend of over 15 years, we can no longer be friends but if she were in trouble or having a really hard time then I’d be there for her. Just because we aren’t friends does not mean I stopped caring about what happens to her or that my love for her just disappeared, and this is exactly the same with your ex. So please don’t take that as a way for him to say that he still wants to be with you, because misleading yourself in such a harmful way is ultimately more hurtful and makes this harder for you.

Because he is scared of being alone, but also he isn't that into you. So, it's a he wants his cake and eat it too situation. He want to keep you close in case he can't find anything better, but also want to keep you at arms length so he doesn't have to officially date you.
