I can't say that will always work. Practically very little to none. Because there is a bordering point between ignoring the BS stupidity from dumbasses to tolerating harassment from stupid people until the harassment does become physical intimidation or an actual physical fight.

I have witnessed that and experienced that I don't know how many times.

Words can make you feel bad, get upset, but words cannot physically harm you. The intent of the saying is about mental toughness, how one reacts when hurtful words are spoken.

Back in the 50's and 60's it was used frequently. Kids would say it to bullies. I don't believe kids even touch sticks or stones anymore.

You would have to be a master at ignoring hurtful words for the saying to be true. No matter who it is - There is at least one word that can hurt anyone. Don’t ask me what it is - I have no idea what it is but I’m sure it exists.
