What does it mean when a guy says Maybe later?

Recently my ex called me randomly. he told me he couldn't be with anyone it hurts to much. that he needed to focus on himself. he could not be with me. he and I were done. He will always be there for our baby no matter what as it was a part of him. then he finished it all with but maybe later. he left me quite confused.

I don't understand the confusion - he's letting you down easy by saying it's over between you two. Saying "maybe later" is his way of telling you he can't see the future and has no way of saying if he'll change his mind someday or not but right now and for a long time he won't, so if you plan on waiting for him it's a bad idea.

this is also the man who told me 2 weeks before i still had his head and his heart during an argument. i know he is trying to get clean from drugs and if he is saying this then i have a reason not to let him see the kid. he is the one that randomly called me i never messaged him. so basically its him saying after he gets shit stragihtned out there is a 50/50 shot.
