How long would you wait to DTF? Especially if it's LDR?

So this guy and I met on Tinder almost 8 months ago and immediately hit it off. We're both from the same home town and he's 24, I'm 20. We went on several dates and ended up hooking up too. But he had to return to the East Coast cause of grad school and his research. Now to my surprise cause I expected it to end there, we kept talking and video chatting regularly.

I just got back from visiting him on the East Coast for a few days while I was looking at grad schools. He, of course, was kind enough to house me, pay for my meals, and take me around the city. I tried to repay the favor by helping him pack since his lease is ending and he's moving to his friend's couch. He was really happy that I came to visit. I feel like the lines are really getting blurred now cause we'll talk about the future occasionally since he plans on coming back to LA in October. And I guess, it just seems like so much time has passed without us truly defining what we are? Or at least having a clear discussion about it. Previously we both agreed we wanted to date each other but distance was kind of a thing. Is it time to have a DTR talk or should I let it be? And would it be okay to do this over text or should I try to video chat it?
