It was the end of a very nice first date. We were sitting in his car, seeing if the rain would stop so I could go back home without getting soaked, when we realized it wasn't stopping anytime soon he opened his arms for a hug. So I hugged him and he kissed my cheek. Then he asked if he could kiss me.

Why did he ask? I'm not bothered by it or anything, in fact I thought it was really cute, but I've never been asked if it was okay to kiss me before. And from how the night was going, it wasn't super surprising that it ended with a kiss.

He asked out of respect for you. This day and age it's drilled into a man's head to ask for consent first or else it's considered sexual assault (some women would even go far to cry rape). so a man asks just to be safe even if it does kill the moment (especially if a man tends to be less experienced).

Because now in this day and age some girls will report a guy for not asking for everything first. Obviously not all women are like that. I agree with you though asking for something like a kiss takes away the spark and asking for other things to consent to is a turn off.
