Some people claims women cares more about looks because they've to be selective since a pregnancy and child bearing (from an evolutionary perspective) are more of a big job than impregnating people. Good looks may be good genes and health. Others claims men are more picky and cares more about looks than women. I've no idea which gender cares most about looks, but one thing I've noticed is that I see more pretty women dating average men than the opposite. The men can look very unattractive. They're not necessarily always rich either and some are middle class or poor. I rarely sees the opposite.

1) That is called cognitive bias.
2) Women who are very career oriented often feel threatened by a man more successful than them (because they are control freaks themselves, as most career people are), so they will look for weaker, submissive men they can push around. This is not a good long term dating strategy, as it leads to a one sided sexual relationship. You wouldn't believe how many women aged 25 to 30 I see registering to BDSM dating sites looking for casual dominant partners, because their partner is too meek. That's what you get when you are afraid of facing your own personality.

Stems back to hunter, gather days. Back then woman evolved to be less picky in the looks department and more picky when it came to a man providing and protecting. Back than choosing a man that was good looking with average hunting/protecting skills vs choosing a average looking man with good hunting/protecting skills was like choosing between life and death.
It makes sense. I've also noticed there's more beautiful women than handsome men in the world, or at least where I live. Is that related too to what you says?
Because guys are shallow. I can't get over how shallow they are Women who care about money are also shallow gold-diggers in my opinion but some women care about personality, that's why they date less good-looking guys than them (in case where the guy obviously isn't rich)

I think people like Orlando Bloom, Aidan Turner, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt looks good. They're however extremely rare. There's way more women looking like Keira Knightley or Angeline Joe than men looking like Brad Pitt.

Because let's be real here: men tend to put looks over personality. They DO value personality and intelligence, but overall men are more physical.
Whereas women tend to go for personality, charm, and confidence, over looks. Yeah, we do account for looks; not even going to deny that. But the reason we go for more "average" guys is because we're drawn to their other features besides just looks.
That and keep in mind, someone who's average to one person, might be handsome to someone else.
Although attractiveness is subjective, I have a hard time believing that there aren't plenty of men settling for women most people would consider less attractive than them since men are usually settling for what they can get.
Honestly I don't know. Maybe they look past appearance? As an ugly guy who has an attractive girlfriend, every time I ask her she says that I'm beautiful to her.

@AJC997 I'd say that you need to build some confidence. I too have some self esteem issues and can be quite shy, but I make the effort to step up when necessary.
Men are generally more open minded about a lot of characteristics a girl can have thus they tend to let a lot of thing slide. A good looking girl can attract someone at the start on physical magnetism, and even if she’s a wreck some guy will look at the positives and negatives and say eh this could maybe work.
Women tend to be very closed minded about who they will date. So if they earn a good deal of money they want him to earn more, if she is smart then she wants him to be smarter, if she is highly educated he needs to be as well, if she is tall she wants him to be taller, if she’s strong she wants him to be stronger, so on and so forth and there are only a handful of guys that can do it all out there. So you end up with a bunch of women with no physical magnetism expecting some guy to approach them out of the blue that is almost better than them in every way and that’s just not happening.
Guys typically play it as it goes, while women are trying to find someone to fit a role for some fantasy five step lifestyle they are trying to acquire.
Because they think the way they do, they think getting a Ph. D, or having a high income, and other crap on paper will make up for physical attraction at the start and normal human charm and it certainly does not for men, but we don’t have a check list with levels of success women need to meet.
It's all about the person's income earnings and potential. Rarely do you see a doctor with an ugly wife. It's not because all doctors are charming and good-looking. It's because they make bank and work really hard for what they have. Women who would rather stay-at-home than work a shitty 9-5 job marry rich doctors. DUH!
The same is true for Hollywood. If you were a woman trying to kick off her movie career, would you date some good-looking guy, or would you date some beady-eyed balding Harvey Weinstein Jew with the capital to make you a movie star if you get down on your knees and worship his circumcised penis? (It's not hard to understand why women go for men like this. MONEY.)
By the way, that's a picture of Olivia Wilde with some Jewish movie producer. She's married to Jason Sudeikis and consequently doesn't have much of an acting career. But you can bet she was acting up a storm on the casting couch to get her few movie roles.
Honestly, looks have never been a huge deal to me. I don’t fawn over attractive men. I simply notice attractiveness and forget about it a second later. I value loyalty, intelligence, humour and compassion. There’s nothing worse than being with a boring, ignorant playboy with a nice face.
I would mostly say it's hard to find FAMOUS couples were the guy is more attractive than the girl. But in on the streer generally most partners I see tend to similar attractiveness, while in case if not similar bauty I can equally see on the street guys hotter than the girl and girls hotter than the guy. It's only on TV where I see a lot more of hotter girls than their partner. But this is just my subjective POV.
Pretty women would only date average men if i) he is rich and that also ii) increases her social status. Pretty men wouldn't date average women cause i) he doesn't need money from her cause he is most probably rich himself and she would ii) decrease his social status. Basically what I am saying is that women chase men for both his money and status but men chase women for her status ( dating a pretty chick increases your social status and dating an ugly chick decreases your social status) but not for her money (cause most men are richer than women anyway).
You mean average looking men don't you? There is nothing average about a man who can make me laugh and get into my mind. It really is too bad men are so superficial. We are eccentric and eclectic and require more than this type of cave man way of thinking.
In my opinion I think women consider other factors such as financial stability, social status, intellect, loyalty, honesty, hygiene and so on when seeking a partner. So a man may be fulfing in those other areas and not match up in the looks department but we still date them.
Men give more priority to looks TBH. Unlike women who value several other traits in men and don't necessarily need their men to look the best, it's not true for men.

Same problem as you buddy. Cute girls will flirt with me until they realize I’m a nervous wreck with a pretty girl around. I can literally see their faces and their eyes change as their attraction to me disappears. At first one cute but the shyness makes me hideous.
Sadly men are superficial and only see value in young, healthy, fertile women. Statistically women want to be taken care of primarily financially fame and fortune goes a long way for a man. Also men can conceive babies pretty much until they die and this may have a biological role in our selection of partners.
It's easy to understand once you apply the following rules.
1) Women date horizontally or up (in age) focused on social-economic status and attributes. Women practice hypergamy and seek mates of a higher status then themselves.
2) Men date horizontally and down (in age) focused on beauty and fertility.
These men are not attractive, but it's possible that they have a high social economic status that women prize more.
Women want a guy who is as smart or smarter then them, earns as much or more, is taller then them, generally is a little older then them, is emotionally strong and can handle their moods, and is hot. Typically they have to prioritize a bit.
Men want a girl who is cute, nice, and doesn't fuck other guys.
I know a friend that is pretty good looking and his girlfriend is fat and not that attractive.
I dont really pay attention to womens rating on male attractiveness. Women dont know what is attractive. For example about half of women tell me im not that good looking and half tell me im sexy as fuck and where have i been all their life. Im super masculine looking which i think scares a lot of women. But all this means is you say they aren't attractive but maybe to other women they are very sexy.
I knows guys personally that are considered average or unattractive by the Western beauty standards. Some of them are overweight and balding. They're not rich and dates women that's considered cute or pretty by most people. Although the women often are the same age as the men, it's not rare they looks younger than the men. I've seen it going the other way too, but it's way rarer where I lives.
Men look for the most genetically superior genes for their young... Why they like look.. Woman look for safety for the offspring why status and other things is important to them.

I’ve seen the opposite happen often enough too. It’s because they’re attracted to their personality. They probably knew each other a while before becoming a couple. Makes sense if you ask me.
Women care little about physical looks. Since women are dominated by emotions, the right words spoken and a woman will fall for a Beavis and Butthead looking type dudes.

That's Olivia Wilde. She married to the equally beautiful Jason Sudeikis.
I only picked a random picture from google of a man and woman standing next to each other. It was a picture I choose to grab attention on GAG, not necessary because they're married. Jason Sudeikis looks okay and the league gap isn't that big, although I find Olivia Wilde better looking though.
Because: Women don't care about looks as much as men. Women care about $$$$

I think some woman just don’t find it necessary to have someone very handsome. Some woman just need and want guidance and someone, to make them feel special and happy. Someone who can be more than a partner, a father figure, psychologist etc.
