Asking a friend about a girl?

A friend of mine at this function wanted to randomly introduce me to a couple of his relatives. One of them was his sister and the other was his cousin. All 4 of us were talking for a little bit and I was very much interested in his cousin. I did not get any contact details or anything from her as the whole interaction didn't last more than 15 mins. My question is it ok to follow up with my friend about this girl about her availability (if she's single, interested in dating etc) or would it seem a bit too much? As I do not see them very often as we live in opposite ends of the city.
