Guys, he cancelled a date at last minute, saying his grandmother died, but didn't reschedule. Is he lying?

I am quite chocked about it. We planned this date with three days in advance. He texted a few times confirming and when I arrived at the place, at the exact time we were supposed to meet, he texted saying that his grandmother died and he didn't feel like going out. Later he even said he spent the night crying... I was the most understanding and supportive person ever. However, when I suggested to rechedule it, he stopped answering. I don't know him well, we just met a couple of times, but it is hard to believe that someone would invent such a lie. Why and what for? If he didn't want to meet me, he could had said something else in advance... at least I wouldn't feel such a fool to be worried about him... What do you think?
