My boyfriend says he’ll leave me if I get fat?

Question

Today my boyfriend told me he’d leave me if I get fat. He says that it’s not fair to a partner to let yourself go and not take care of yourself. I agree with that sentiment, especially if it puts stress on the relationship.
But what are your thoughts? A part of me thinks it’s superficial. Another part thinks that it’s fair.

We really have no right to be overindulged in gluttony, aka fat while so much of the world is suffering and/or starving. The world already despises us and American obesity only has them look at us with even more disgust. America tosses enough food in the garbage each day to end world hunger. What's even more disgusting yet is those who sell food would rather.. no, insist that food be thrown away before letting someone have it that cannot pay for it. That in turn creates hunger in America as well.
Personally, my disinterest in heavy girls is the limitations it puts on physical intimacy. I like a girl I can maneuver and manhandle and be in control of what pleases her. If she's big & heavy there's only a couple of positions to do anything to have it become routine and boring which makes it hard for guys, a man can't flip a switch on and off to become erect or not, it must be turned on.

I'm trying to get myself down from being borderline obese, which is really deceptive by the way because we have such a warped idea of what obese looks like. All I had was "a bit of a gut", and 15 more pounds would've tipped the scales, so to say. Anyway, I am putting in effort to make myself more healthy and I would just ask the same for my partner. I don't think it's superficial considering that the way you treat your body really is a reflection of yourself.

It's not like I'm asking for a supermodel here, I'm just saying maybe don't eat processed carbs all day.

well as long as he doesn't think 10 more pounds is fat. I've only ever heard of guys prefering their girls to gain lol because its better or just means they love you enough to not push themselves to ignore their true selves.

Girlfriend is one thing, wife is quite another. My very good friend's wife packed on 150 pounds during the first ten years of their marriage. He told the wife that while he doesn't expect perfection, he does expect a weight below 200 pounds. Her current GVW is 300+ pounds, and with no loss of weight in sight.

Married means that he can't get rid of her. It would cost him a fortune to divorce her fat ass, so he's stuck. They haven't had sex in 25 years and haven't slept in the same room in 20, and that won't change. In the meantime, he has so many side chicks that I can't keep track of them.

He's just a man with preferences and he's being honest. And there's nothing wrong about it. If anyone has the access and ability to hit the gym and stay fit, then they have no excuse for being fat. It's just laziness. What he's saying is completely fair. (I'm assuming he's in shape too).

Being fat facilitates an unhealthy lifestyle and self destructive behaviour. It's just not healthy to either of you.

It's both superficial and fair in different ways. That sounds like a pretty ugly and uncaring thing to say to someone when you're just thinking in terms of appearance. However, there's a lot of other physical, mental, and emotional problems that go along with being lazy and obese. Regardless of how a person feels about how to answer this question, life is going to be a lot better if you continue to exercise and maintain an healthy body weight.

What about him if he gets fat, loses his hair, can't get it up, does he think those are ok reasons to leave him.
Ask him about that.
People change as they age, it happens.
Sometimes for reasons we can't control.
It is just a dumb statement.
Might be time to be with someone that accepts you for who you are, not what you look like now or later.

It's superficial.

Everyone has their standards and expectations in a relationship. You either accept it and stay with them or you don't and leave them. Anything else will just lead to woes in your relationship. Especially trying to change them.

Just be glad he was at least being honest. Rather than hiding it. Leading to unexpected relationship trouble in the future.

I think that's fair. That's why people say you should "be yourself". If he met you when you weren't trying to be slim or "beautiful", and he still liked you then, It'd be a very comfortable and easy relationship. Not being yourself could get you a partner, but then you'd be living a lie.
