My mom spent 50 years trying too quit before succeeding. The sooner he gets clean the better.
Get him some counseling to get to the REASON he gets depressed and thinks he NEEDS the nicotine.

I stop a 3.5 a day smoking habbit with toothpicks. I transfer my smoking habit to the toothpick habit. Which more easier to quit.
