Isn't it worthless to learn cooking as a guy?

If you set aside the fact that everyone needs to learn basics for supporting themselves. As a relationship skill, it's actually worthless for men. The majority of men either don't know or will not cook anything let alone develop the skills further for home. If they are professionally doing it that's fine.

I have seen most women don't mind cooking for the guys they love and men marry women for their housing and cooking skills. Even, several of my recent friends have done so. But as a man, your cooking skills can do nothing. Women do like the idea of men cooking for them but they will not eventually date them for that.

That’s one of the craziest things I’ve ever read on GaG, and that’s saying a LOT! First, ALL of the best chefs on Earth are men, so that blows you men can’t cook theory! Second, NO, obviously no woman is going to date a guy JUST because he knows how to cook. But it is absolutely a very large check-mark on most women’s “husband material” checklist! And NOTHING is more romantic that the 4th or 5th date, he invites her you his place for dinner, (that he made), you shaved… well, everything, and you’re wearing that one matching sexy bra & panty set, even though the bra hurts so much you wanna kill the guy who designed it! But trust. Me, by date 4 or 5 if a guy invites me over and he hand made a delicious meal for me… Wow that means a lot! So if you are just under her minimum score for let’s move to serious relationship, and are about to get the “we need to talk” speech, but then you suddenly pop out the fact that you can cook… and very well at that! Yep, that definitely puts you way over the, “this guy’s definitely a keeper” score!

***NOTE*** There is not actually a “Score Keeping system”, I simply used it metaphorically. So Asking about it is pointless. Everyone has their own set of standards, which we use to evaluate if someone would be a good fit for us, personally… long term!

Guys who can't cook are unattractive af. It means they either live with mummy and treat it like a hotel or throw out money for take out every day or survive on frozen pizza. Cooking is a life skill. An adult should be able to live on themselves. While there's nothing wrong in living in arrangements where a man doesn't cook, he should be able to. Not to mention a woman can get sick and be unable to cook for a bunch of days. What if I need to visit a sick relative or want to go on holidays for a few days? What if he needs to take care of a child while I'm ill or gone for a few days?

It’s not worthless. It’s an important survival skill and demonstrates your capacity to be independent and self-sufficient. It shows that you have your sh*t together and that’s always attractive to women.

It’s an important adulting skill as well. Many women prefer a man that is mature or mature for their age in terms of how they carry themselves and conduct their lives. How many women date men younger than them, right? It’s not as common as women dating men who are older, even if it’s just by a little.

As for personal experience, I’ve dated girls who bragged to other girls about how I can cook and what I cooked for Valentine’s Day or for our anniversary. It’s a flex when you know how to cook restaurant-grade cuisine.

Why would that make them worthless? Women eat, too. Now, it's true that a guy will usually enjoy food that his woman makes for him more than the reverse; that's how we're wired. But that doesn't mean you'll *never* feed your woman, or that she won't enjoy it if you do. Heck, the FACT that it's rare gives it some value- a guy who can make you a quick snack or a even a big meal and doesn't need to resort to mac and cheese or ordering a pizza is an asset- perhaps not a huge one, but one who gets bonus points for being unusual.

Don't discount the value of rarity in assessing your abilities as a prospective partner.

You should learn how to cook and how to cook well. You should also learn to clean and be tidy. Stop expecting women to do all of the home care. What happens if your partner is unable to do these things because of illness? Or injury? Just going to eat ramen and take out for weeks? House going to go into chaos, laundry will pile up, then she will have to play catch up when she feels better. That is NOT equal partnership.

Cooking is a survival skill not part of a gender role. My father taught me how to cook so that I wouldn't starve to death or rely on restaurant food all the time. I didn't learn how to cook for my potential future husband because just like me I imagine that he would have two fully functioning hands and a brain.

Not every guy will have a life long partner who knows how to Cook and even if she/he were to know how to cook it doesn't necessarily mean that that partner will always be willing to cook for them.

I believe that the only person who should see cooking as a worthless skill is something who has plans to hire help (professional cook) to cook for him for the rest of his life.

Wife or girlfriend doesn't translate to cook/maid.

Are you kidding? Most women won't mind to cook, but to even have the OPTION of the man cooking once in a while would be greatly appreciated by almost all women. Not to mention if you do happen to like a woman who doesn't like to cook, the fact that you would be willing to would be a great positive in a relationship.

It's like singing. If you're hot you get a pass, even if you can't do it people pretend you can. But if you're not hot I guarantee being able to sing well will make you noticeably more attractive.

Nine of these alone will carry a relationship though and I am not the expert obviously lol, but that's that's I think.

Your wrong guys need to know how to cook. Its not a useless skill. When I was married my ex wife would bitch all the time about things. And act like she contributed more to the house hold than I did.

I always told her that the things she claims she does for me she really does for herself. For example married to me or not she would do laundry, cook, clean and take care of the kids. Only difference is that she would need to go out and get a real job like she said she would.

I told her that all those things laundry, cooking and cleaning she would do regardless for herself anyway. If I was not married to her, I would not starve , I would still wear clean clothes, and I would not live in a pig sty. So stop pretending you deserve better or more when I provided everything and more. And in divorce I cook, clean and do my laundry just fine and I am 10 times more happier without her nagging ass around.

I prefer it if the guy actually learns how to cook so he doesn't have to wait at home for his girl to come home and cook. Being a stud muffin may help attract the ladies, but keeping them is a different story. They don't want to be your mother. They want you to be a functioning adult including being able to take care of them (or the kids) in the event that she is sick or gone or just plain tired.

So, if you want to score points with women, and, later a wife, and actually keep them, then learn how to cook... and be better than minimally competent.

I am serious. It may not seem that a man's ability to cook is important, but once they realize you can do it, they are silently very happy about that because they really want you to be competent at taking care of her and the kids and cooking is one critical skill that is part of that.

Being able to cook plain food seems for me a basic skill everyone should learn. Already in my childhood I learned a few basics like peeling and cooking patatoes, preparing dough for pancakes, preparing vegetables, etc. Believe me that this has been useful through whole my life.

Now, just to tell things out of honesty as they were, I have been married during 38 years, and even if was able to cook correctly and do other household tasks, my wife never wanted me to, safe the last year of her life because she wasn't able anymore. My wife basically considered cooking and most jobs in the household as her share in the household and her prerogative, although she knew I was open to help. Since I'm widowed and single since a few years, I cook every day, and with pleasure :0)

You're a caveman. I learned to cook because I "had to". Now I cook because I LIKE TO, and I'm good at it. There are many times when my S. O. worked long hours and came home too exhausted to even think about cooking, and the answer isn't "take out" all the time.

As to dating, you're wrong there too. I've flirted with many girls in the past and mentioned " I can cook you a great meal" and they said "You can cook? I'm in!" Marriage had nothing to do with it, but it definitely got me some dates and girls coming to my house.

Think of cooking as a self defence skill, it doesn't matter if women like or dislike a man who cooks, you cook for yourself, you can batch cook all your favourite dishes and freeze them in meal size portions. I can scratch cook a pizza faster than I can get one delivered and it would be cheaper.
If you think it is worthless as a relationship skill the you are dating the wrong type of woman, doing a scratch cooked three course dinner is impressive to women who are wanting long term relationships.

When I'm sick, or in the future when I'm pregnant or just gave birth and am not feeling like doing much, or for when he just wants to treat me, it is a huge relief and help when he cooks a good meal for me, and I appreciate it a lot. It's worthwhile as a life skill and should be taught in schools how to cook. It's great for living alone so you can cook nice meals that are healthy and it's good for when in a relationship for dates with your partner, just generic splitting of household work/chores. Which cooking is in a way part of it.
And tbh the reason this is as common as you say is actually the fact men have the same attitude as you do. If you marry someone you love you shouldn't be marrying then for there housework skills and you shouldn't expect them to do all of it.
