Guy on dating app asked for my friend’s number. Is he trying to play games with me to increase my interest?

I have pictures with a friend on my dating app. Me and this guy matched and started talking. Later in the convo he asked who my friend was, said she was hot, and asked if she was single. I was turned off by this and lost interest and didn’t yet respond back. My male friend told me this guy is trying to gain my interest by the “negging” technique where guys are rude to you to get you to like them more or bring down your confidence so you want them more. Is that true? Would a guy pretend to find my friend hot to get me? Or do you think we was genuine?
