I think I know what you mean. This one time I was driving home late at night from a high school party, it was like 3 in the morning. I was upset because this girl that I liked had just started dating this other guy who was like 26. I was driving very fast on a country road and I misjudged where the turn was. I came over the hill going very fast ans I saw the turn up ahead. I immediately hit the brakes and started sliding on gravel for what seemed like a great distance. It was the so far that I could've rolled the window down and said "I'm having an accident." so anyway, I ended up hitting a tree and my head hit the windshield (This was back when seat belts were just a suggestion) and my head put a big circular crack in the windshield. I got out of the truck and walked a few miles to my home. Then I grabbed a farm truck and drove back to pull my truck out of the ditch. Then I drove my wrecked truck home, then I had to ride a bicycle back to go get the farm truck. It was a very long night similar to a lot of my nights as a teenager. So the important thing to remember about life is that things happen and sometime you can break a windshield with your head at 17 and not even feel it. I think that truck was very damaged in the front end and I had to replace the bumper, grill, and headlight on that old Ford truck for sure. That girl I liked went on to marry that 26 year old, they have a few kids together, but now they're divorced. She cheated on him and he ended up dating a less attractive woman, but maybe a woman who's better for him. She always was a cheater so maybe I dodged a bullet with her anyway, but I didn't dodge that tree unfortunately, ha ha. No back your original question. "What does it mean when somebody says it's better to get used to your absence before you leave?" I suppose it's kind of like when you were a school kid and summer break was coming to an end. I's best to start getting used to going to bed early again so that it's not such a shock to your system when you start having to get up early again for school. So essentially your friend doesn't want your absence to be a shock to him and he wants to adjust to it slowly just like how you prepare yourself to get up for school and it sucks.
