Wearing socks has always been considered more hygienic. The trend to go without socks is fairly recent.

It's a lot easier and cleaner to pull off a pair of socks and wash them than it is to clean the inside of shoes.

Do you mostly wear open shoes that are well ventilated? With closed shoes you get sweat and moisture, along with the odor and fungus that results from that. It's a breeding ground for athlete's foot. This is why they sell shoe sprays specifically to deal with both odors and fungus.
