How do I break up with my boyfriend of 9 months via text or in person?

As the text says, unfortunately, there are just fundamental differences I cannot get past;

I shared my concern with him four days ago that I didn't believe we were compatible via text, we spoke on the phone for 30 minutes, and he tried to reassure me that my feelings were valid and that things would get better, and that he was willing to spice things up and make changes, and that he was sorry that I felt this way and that he really loves me.

Unfortunately, my fundamental issue is with his family and parents and how much they control and influence him as a 27-year-old man; I fear that this issue will continue, and if we do get married, it will be painful. Furthermore, they are not the friendliest individuals, and I sure do not wish to be part of that negative energy 1+ years from now.

I didn't mention this to him, as I understand they are his family, so I told him these emotions had been around for weeks, but I just wasn't sure how to express things to him, but didn't specify what my issue were when he asked.

With that being said, I do not wish to lead him on, and I do believe we are better as friends; how do I break up with him in an amicable manner? He is 27. I'm 26.
