Why would a guy do this with online dating?

Ok, so I met this guy online. He took awhile to respond and then I asked to speak on the phone. He gave me his number and we decided on a time to speak. He blew me off so I said to him take care and he's like no no and we spoke. He wasn't rushing to ask me out and when I became more flirty we did decide to meet up and agreed to go out to dinner. I tried to back out because my gut was telling me no, so I then became wishy washy. But we ended up going out and after the date, he said he had such a good time and said all these things he wanted to do (like future dates). I actually had a good time as well and felt chemistry. But then the only second date he was pushing for was to go back to his place for dinner so I declined. After declining, he then told me to meet at a bar for our next meet, but he blew me off. He then texted me with some lame excuse so I basically told him to never speak to me again. He kept texting me and long story short we spoke for five months- he would speak to me and say we will meet and never did. He would tell me all these excuses and blow me off. For example, he would say let's meet at 1 tomorrow, but then blew me off. So when he would blow me off , I would confront him and he would say an excuse and say I'm not understanding or not patient. I would tell him to just not talk to me and he wouldn't want that. He even told me that if I date we wouldn’t be anything more than friends. I did still date around. We recently had a fight and I think he ended it with me? He said- wasn’t it obvious I was never into you. I feel relieved, but also feel very weird and stupid about this situation and how I continued to talk to such a liar. Thoughts on him and myself in all this? Thank you!

Also, just to add... I found out he lied about his age, not graduating college, etc.
