So what is "catfishing" exactly. I've heard it used many different ways, but I don't date online. Is it pretending to be a 10 when you're a 2 or 20 yo when you're 41? Or is it pretending to be a made up person? Or is it all of the above?

it's more for scientific purposes because this level of anonymity is the only way to get the truth out of most people. regular science experiments by government funded research facilities are often having to deal with self-reported interests that can be misleading and untruthful
would I want to get scammed myself? absolutely not but I can't get mad at the scammers when I'm the one responsible for responding to the scam

Well, sometimes you might feel like you are being catfished but it turns out that the person you talking with is actually someone who is real and also, someone who is genuinely interested in you. It happened to me once and it was so horrible, so it is not that easy to tell whether someone is a catfish or not.🤣🤣
