But it also depends on what you mean by online.
If you’re talking about apps like Tinder, then yeah—success will be heavily skewed towards looks.
If you’re talking about matchmaking sites like eHarmony, they not only require a monthly subscription, but you also need to take a bunch of personality tests and have thoroughly written profiles, which means the people on there actually care what your personality is and what’s in your bio.
Then you have apps that are in between like Instagram or Facebook, where you are able to see their feed and what kind of content they put out.
So, I’d say it’s a spectrum. Some platforms are more personality-based. Other platforms are more looks-based.
So it really depends on where you are online—if the platform attracts a more superficial crowd or more sophisticated crowd.

I don't even think it's about looks. It's probably more about those who are sad enough to pay for that junk, since those profiles will invariably be prioritised.
