When did ASKING for HER NUMBER become the FIRST thing to do?

When I was younger and dating, a guy would ask the girl out and then if she said yes, they would exchange numbers.

Today, a guy asks a girl he's interested in for her number and if she gives it to him, he says he will call her... often a few days later to arrange a date.

When did asking for her number become the first thing to do?

I tend to be old school too. In this case she appears to be working so she doesn't have much time for chit-chat and it may be your only opportunity to say something to her. I would not want to get her in trouble with a manager by talking to her while she's working. Not a good way to start something up.

My typical approach is asking her how her days going and see if that starts up a conversation.

I lead with "how is your day going" because it shows you care enough to ask how her day's been so far and obviously make the effort to actually listen. If by the end of the conversation, she suggests exchanging numbers then I know she's interested. I leave that part to her, because if I make the effort to start the conversation, its nice to know she'll meet me halfway towards the end.

I find it equalizes the effort between both parties when starting up a conversation - she gets some feedback and you get some feedback. It can't be one sided all the time.

I am old school... I would much prefer to have a man ask me out on a date, and then exchange phone numbers with him. I don't like this trend of the guy asking for my number and then I have to wonder if he'll actually call to set up a date.

Then again, I am a cheap date because I would prefer for a first date to be at a coffee shop where we sit and drink a cup of coffee over a pastry or a food truck lunch at a picnic table in the park. I want to be able to talk to you and get to know you.

If we make it to a second date maybe we'll go bowling or to a movie, or maybe a picnic.

I guess we’re just all in different generations or regions or whatever because asking for each others number first started when i was in 6th grade/2006. This continued on through today for me. But it wasn't until i saw on GaG that people ask for a date first. Thats new to me. I guess because phones came before i was even old enough to date

In my jumbled mind I think, does a girl have to be desperate to even entertain this? Does anyone who asks her for her phone number get it? She doesn't know these guys from Adam, and for all she knows they could be a Craig's List Killer looking for a potential victim. My suggestion would never give out your real phone number to a stranger, unless it is for a burner phone where they can't use it to track you down. Don't wind up a statistic. Think right, so you may not potentially be "left" - on a slab. 😯

I didn't know that's how it's done now. I thought you approached the girl with a flirty line and if she laughed you sat down and talk. After talking for a bit and you both get up to leave, that's when you get her number.
Why would someone get a girls number if they know nothing about her?

At school and work, yes the talking would happen before the number exchange, but not the date. However, outside of school, like if im at the movies, library, sports event, gas station, grocery store, etc, dudes would ask for my number to keep in touch to get to know me. See at school/work, you see the person daily. At these other places, you see them by chance and want a way to keep in touch

The only logical conclusion would be that he didn't ask for her number for dating purposes. That's just the only way he knows how to communicate.

Call her? No no no no no. They text, they don't call. Calling now days is seen as a psychopathic act. You text, change snaps and so on, no calling, it is very important

Maybe because back then there was no smart phones, only a telephone with a wire and it takes like a minute to dial a number 😄

That must have been during the phase when public phone cells disappeared.

Until then we could look it up in a phone book.

I go on the date first. If it goes well I ask for a number.

Personally though, I think it makes more sense to get the number first, its non commital, yiu have numbers of friends and family, so it gives time to text and call and ask questions and be friends before deciding anything.
