I've heard and seen many scenarios where two people will hit it off really well first thing and then get into a relationship. I'm curious if it's possible for two people to have somewhat interest in each other and it's a little awkward between then. Or on a first date they have a decent time but it's a little "quiet" if you know what I mean. Can things still go anywhere if there's that awkwardness?

Absolutely things can still go well. That is so common. There is always some awkwardness. Even if one party doesn't find it awkward the other might. That is so normal to have on a first date. I have had it happen to me. You just don't know the other person real well or what they are interested in talking about so sometimes there is that silence. It really doesn't mean that is the end of things. It just means you are still feeling each other out. I have found the second and third dates usually go much better as far as conversation is concerned.
It can go somewhere. It will just be slower because the awkwardness leads to less communication.
