Writing Game: "Are you calling me roadkill?" What preceded this?

AmandaYVR

So, yesterday I went out to dinner and afterward my husband and I were walking toward home down a busy city street. He overheard a woman say to her man, "Are you calling me roadkill?"

The man she was with (definitely her boyfriend/partner) who was walking very quickly ahead of her, not with her, turned his head back and said something angrily to her, which we couldn't hear.

It made me laugh. I've been wondering since then, what could have preceded that. What did he say to her before and after that, that would prompt her to say that?

I'm thinking about writing a scene in my novel about this. The couple was in an argument, supposedly, but I'm more interested in something humorous. I like zoning in on tight, very specific dialogues that aren't necessarily long conversations between characters, but they illustrate a lot about who they are, their differences, conflict, and how they resolve conflict.

I thought I'd ask this question here, and see if anyone has any ideas. We can make a bit of a game out of it. Let's make it fun, and not too nasty, the scenario, okay?

Write as little or as much as you want, but if you know me, I most like not just a good punchline but a good lead-up too, so use your imagination, maybe even tell me a little story that has occurred between these two. I read everything and I like creatives.
