How to avoid getting caught for plagiarism again?

I got a 0 for my first Java assignment (there's 4 for the course) cause I was caught plagiarizing. But the thing is the professor accused me of copying another student when I just got the solution from Chegg. I changed some of the variables to make it less obvious but she somehow still found out. I suspect it's cause the other guy used Chegg too and both of our code was similar enough while not fulfilling assignment guidelines properly. She told me in my feedback also I was supposed to import JavaFX and not swing, which probably also gave it away that I cheated.

I did try to go to her for help and initially was against cheating, though at the time I had a shit ton of other assignments and exams to do. She sucks at communicating and often just ignores what I ask or reply to her in person and online. At least this and all the other assignments are merely worth 5% of my final grade each, and I already did pretty well on the midterm exam (which was open book). The labs may be worth 3% each, but there's 10 in total so focusing more on those will improve my grades over the assignments.

Do you guys have any tips for me to do better in the course, hopefully without cheating again? My current Java assignment doesn't have a solution on Chegg, and also the professor generously provided some reference files anyways. My course average before getting the 0 was at 73%... now after it has dropped to 65% which sucks. I've been through worse though; I remember failing my statistics course after the midterms yet making a comeback and passing it with over 80%. If she wasn't so shit and provided more help, I wouldn't have felt to use Chegg.

The way to avoid getting caught is to not plagiarize in the first place. @confusedgirl100 advice is the best: study and practice more to which I would add four other pieces of advice: 1) go to the professor's office hours whenever they are available; 2) make friends with the best student in the class and ask them for advice; 3) find a tutor -- they are usually everywhere.; and 4) ask the professor for help.

My first sentence told the asker not to plagiarize. I ended that sentence with a period. The new sentence started with tagging you meaning that your advice is the best. I wanted to give you credit. The professor doesn't have office hours after she merged it with the lab session. She did that cause it was inconvenient to have to go to another classroom in another building. And she was somehow able to convince whatever department was responsible for hosting the classes in the classroom during the office hours and lab time to be given to her. So now the lab session happens right after the lecture instead of there being a 1 hour break which was her original office hours.

How well do you think that is going to go if you skate through your courses to make a grade, but don't learn to program by yourself? I've been in high tech for almost 30 years. I'm at one of the FAANG companies and interview candidate programmers. Half of the interview is writing code. You can't fake your way through that. I've rejected many MSCS graduates who couldn't code at all. If you aren't motivated to learn to solve these problems by yourself you might want to reconsider your career plans.

I'm in my third semester (3/4), and previously only learned intro to Java aka OOP course. The current Java course is about data structures and algorithms.

A company that acted like that wouldn't be very successful. My company happily hires people who can program, regardless of whether or not they have a degree. There are two people on my team of six without computer science degrees. They went through one-year programs, interned, and got hired.
