You got things wrong, he should send you a message if something extra needs to be done. You only need to confirm you get these when they come so he knows you are on the tasks. Otherwise follow your standing orders. You shouldn't micro manage your manager.

Not your problem. If someone comes to you, about something you haven't done and he hasn't told you about it. Say as it is. He will eventually get in problem, don't try to save himself from himself. Let him self-destruct. That open up his position if you want it then.
