Do you think this is too much of a notice and too generous and a possibility that I could be terminated?
Should I just wait until next Friday to give it?
The shortest notice period you are required by your work contract (or local law) to provide.
Once you have accepted a new job:
- You don't want to be there. Let's be honest, you aren't going to produce much.
- They don't want you to be there. You are a risk to the organisation.
Honestly, a one or two day handover and clean out your desk normally works best for everyone involved. Most employers will pay you for a contractually-required period and not actually have you work most, if any, of that period.
Also... congratulations!!! and on your update double congratulations.
Thank you!!!
Just do 2 weeks. But it's funny, isn't it? They can lay you off without notice, but THEM you have to give a 2 weeks notice. So funny how that works.
Ah you can't just quit on the spot? Getting fired doesn't look good. I got fired from mine and now I'm having problems.
You know what? Fuck the two weeks notice. If you can start right away, just tell them you found something else and you're quitting. Fuck it! I got laid off THREE times and didn't get a 2 week notice, but EMPLOYERS want one?
I'm serious! Fuck it! If you already have the new job secure, fuck their 2 week notice. Just quit
No. I work from home and have all their equipment so it would be awkward when I have to give it back if I did that immediately. I want to believe me I do but I'm just doing this out of respect and courtesy.
Advisor Smith here.
In most at‑will jobs, more notice is never a problem; it’s usually seen as professional and considerate. Three weeks is quite normal, especially for roles with responsibilities or projects to hand off.
Yes, technically they *could* end your employment earlier, but in my experience that’s rare when you’re leaving on good terms and not joining a direct competitor.
Ask yourself:
- Do you need the income for all 3 weeks?
- Is there any history of the company treating leavers badly?
If not, give the 3 weeks and leave a strong final impression.

I just go with my gut. If the people were asshole and don't care about me. I'd say just leave whenever works for you. Maybe contact hr and see if there's a severance package option. That you might be leaving on the table.
But other other than a place that has really treated you right maybe tall to your favorite boss and tell them you're litely leaving in x amount of time. You're getting a job with (insert a hint about what they could do to keep you) I just want to make sure you don't get blinded by the shining light that is my presence suddenly leaving you in this dark cave.
2 weeks is the normal courtesy. And even then, they can terminate you whenever depending on the laws in your state. I wouldn’t bother with 3 weeks.
You are not required to give any notice. They can walk you to the door with no notice. You can walk out the door with the same notice. The purpose of giving notice is to allow your employer an orderly transition of your key responsibilities to other people. It's a courtesy. In my experience, this almost never happens and zero work gets done in that notice period. Just tell them on the day you want to quit as late in the day as possible. In my mind, GIG employers deserve zero courtesies from a contractor. It's just business. Go wherever you get paid. No apologies.
I think that if you give a 3 week notice it might be better and here's why.
That gives them 2 weeks to find a replacement for you and one week to train them for their new job.
You could even mention this when giving your 3 weeks notice.
I'm not sure what State you live in, but some States you don't have to give any notice or reason, but neither do they. I think (?) they call it a no fault State (?).
Hmm they might be ok with that but i remember when i gave just a two weeks notice once, they didn't even give me two weeks. just one and i was out lol. that might happen. they'll just stop scheduling you
Thanks. I hope not but if that happens I have something to fall back on.
Absolutely, the more notice the better and is usually appreciated by employers. Depending on the role, there is a slight chance that an employer will want to cut it short or ask you to leave immediately, subject to payment of the required two weeks in lieu
The only reason giving them notice is so you can collect unemployment checks and smoke weed all day for 6 months. 3 Weeks should work.
That's what I was taught at least... I just collect welfare and live off women.
Of course. I think they’d probably appreciate more of a notice.
Thanks!
Good luck! I think three weeks is fine, but if you want to give just two you certainly can.
Thanks!
If I quit my job they can kiss my ass because im not coming back after I let them know im gone.
Although by law I have to work for another month officially but im not doing that. Especially not if I already found another job
Yep. Just wait unti the two week mark. Because they may put out feelers for someone to replace you and get them in place early and, as you say, terminate you.
You don't HAVE to give them any specific length of notice unless it's in your employment contract. Two weeks IS the norm, though. I would give the least amount of time in advance allowed by your local laws.
I think its always good to leave a job on the best possible terms for references, contacts and the chance you may need to return
@Simslover92 Two weeks' notice is standard and probably sufficient notice. Three weeks is probably more than you need to give
I think it’s okay. It would give them extra time to find a replacement.
If you worked for me, your last day of employment is the day you give your notice.
That depends on who you work for. It is one month where I am.
When in job-quitting land, do as the other job-quitters do.
What, send photocopies of their bums to all-staff emails?
@MrChinaski LMAO!
Keep it at two. According to Google, a two week notice is sufficient and is standard protocol.
Yeah just don't be surprised if they cut you early. There's no obligation to give any heads up.
They might let you leave in 2 though.
For me it was 3 months expected.
2 or 3 weeks is fine depending on your contract I think
You could be terminated even if you give 2 weeks notice depending on the employer. Either way is fine.
Give the minimum notice stipulated inyour contract, or 30 days, whichever is shorter.
They will most likely fire you on the spot. Giving any notice is out of date. Fuck them.
Give them the traditional two weeks. Don't make it easy on them.
the sooner the better, for me...
Yes if you are on good terms with thrm.
Of course, if you liked that job.
You know better but i think that it's the same!
Yes Elaine that’s plenty of time
If you like cleaning toilets
yes its very decent
I'd go for two.
WAIT
