Yes. In fact, all Americans do to a significant extent.
This is because ALL units involving electricity are actually metric units. And we buy our beverages both in US Customary Units (very similar to Imperial Units) and metric. But, for the most part, most Americans primarily know US Customary Units.
I have a physics degree and one of the first things taught is the metric system since real science is done in metric. We learn to convert early. So, yes, I can go back and forth relatively quickly and, withiin a calculator, can use conversion formulae that I have memorized to get exact values.
For instance, suppose I wanted to know how many milliliters (ml) are in 1 US gallon (1 gal)?
Here's how I would compute that...
First, I'd remember the following definitions...
1 liter = 1000 milliliters
1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter (cm)
2.54 cm = 1 inch
1 gal = 231 cubic inches
OK, so:
1 gal = 231 inches^3 * (2.54 cm / 1 inch)^3 * (1 ml / 1 cm^3)
= 231 * (2.54)^3 ml
(Now for the calculator...)
3785.411784 ml
or about 3.785 l
which is about 5 bottles of wine since a bottle of wine has a capacity of 750 ml.
Yeah. I grew up using standard/imperial measurements, but learned metric in school because it was required at the time. Metric is easy because it goes by increments of 10 so it is simpler.
Yes, not a problem.
Yes, you can use both, and many people do.
In most math or science classes, teachers prefer one system per problem (usually metric). But in real life and on exams, you’ll sometimes see both, especially in countries like the US or UK.
Key points:
- It’s fine to convert between them (e. g., inches to centimeters).
- Be careful to label units clearly.
- Don’t mix systems inside a formula unless you convert everything to one system first.
If you tell me your level/grade, I can give you a quick conversion cheat sheet.

For the most part. I know an inch is ~ 2.57 cm, a kilogram is ~ 2lbs., and I have no clue how much a gallon or a liter are; but ounces and milliliters are both not enough for a drink. I also know that Farenheit and Celsius meet at 32 = 0 respectively and that 1 degree of Celsius is more than 1 but not quite 2 degrees of Farenheit.
I have a rough idea, but sometimes I have to look it up. I know a mile is about 1.6 km. I know 5'9'' is about average height.
In Europe, we are taught the metric system. 100 centimeters = 1 meter.
Nah. I'm not so great with metric. It's easy to understand because it is all multiples of 10. But I'm not good at estimating lengths and distances in millimeters, centimeters, meters and kilometers. I'm used to inches, feet, yards and miles.
Not without a conversion chart. It always annoys me when somebody asks "how tall are you" then follow that up by saying, "I'm a 172cm". So I typically respond with something like, "I'm 1.981e+9 nanometers." Because if they're going to use some obscure form of measurement, why shouldn't i when answering their question.😆 use feet and inches like the rest of the CIVILIZED world.😆
Duh only Americans use feet and inches
172 cm is more precise than 5”7 or I don’t know
DUH, like I said, "The rest of the CIVILIZED world."😆
yeah y'all are civilized too just lazy
That's how we liberated the world from tyranny in WW2 and rose to the richest, most bless nation in the history of mankind. Because we're lazy. That makes sense.🤦♂️😆
We have our SHARE of lazy people, as every nation does.
yes, somewhat.
it's helpful to know you only need to go 10 million meters to get to the north pole from the equator. how they came up with that in 1800... don't know.
At this point time is basically called American. Cuz the whole rest of the freaking world thinks British is the only way to go. We done kick those misfits out of her country little over 250 years ago!
That's hardly needed. There are 197 countries in the world, only 3 are non-metric.
Not at all! I'm American and I suck at math, so when I see metric, it doesn't tell me ANYTHING
I can make fairly decent estimates. I have a converter on one of my computer hot buttons if I need more detail.
I use metric system. I have to check on google if something is in imperial measurements.
I can but I wishe the rest of the world would get wise and get rid of the Metric system. Its a pain to have two sets of sockets.
yep, old and new... both
the good old from England that America insist to use... and the one the rest of the world uses, and makes sense
Yes. Both were taught at school.
I’m not good with the metric system
As long as I have access to google lol
Yes I can use both.
Only when I'm forced to
Nope.
Yeah I can.
Yeap
Yes I can
