Is it weird that most American adults don’t understand health insurance or how any insurance works?

Insurance is a risk-management tool that transfers the financial burden of unexpected events from you to an insurance company. Instead of paying out-of-pocket for a massive loss, you pay a smaller, manageable fee to the insurer.

The insurer collects premiums from thousands of people and pools them together. Because not everyone will experience a disaster at the same time, this pool has enough funds to cover the few who do.
