I certainly think that Michael held Maxwell in high regard, and to me, it's a case of unrequited love. He may have had more than a few ideological disagreements with Maxwell, but he loved Maxwell and was always encouraging. Another case of unrequited love, really.

They are gay Angels and one did something really hard (quantum) for the other and Max was a prick about it , he didn't care. So that's messed up..
