Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, 'The Abyss'
Professional associates, ex-spouses Ed and Mary are stuck in a sinking submerged ship, about to drown, with only oxygen tank. They have to make the life and death decision who stays and who goes. Mary dies while her ex-husband lives. The despair he shows ("Breathe. God damn it, you bitch, you never backed away from anything in your life, now breathe! Fight! Fight! Fight!") is one of my top favourite scenes of all time. I am moved, fighting back a tear, every time I watch this.
'Lord of the Rings, Return of the King'
A father says goodbye to his daughter.
Theoden: "Eowyn, my eyes darken... I go now to my fathers, in whose mighty company I shall not be ashamed..."
"Like tears in the rain... time to die."
Rutger Hauer, Blade Runner
Replicant Roy Batty, his clock run out, saying goodbye.
Perhaps the only time I cared about a robot. None have ever come close to this, for me.
I could come up with more, but I'll stop here.
