Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, 'The Abyss'
Professional associates, ex-spouses Ed and Mary are stuck in a sinking submerged ship, about to drown, with only oxygen tank. They have to make the life and death decision who stays and who goes. Mary dies while her ex-husband lives. The despair he shows ("Breathe. God damn it, you bitch, you never backed away from anything in your life, now breathe! Fight! Fight! Fight!") is one of my top favourite scenes of all time. I am moved, fighting back a tear, every time I watch this.

They try to survive, Seita doing everything he can to feed his little sister, but alas she succumbs to starvation. I am not an anime fan, but this movie is a very notable exception

It's ironic, Syd, how when I was a kid, I used to think, "What are these people upset about? To die at 30? 30 is old!"

And I would have been dead for twenty two years now, had I lived in Dome City. Come to think of it, YOU would be dead if you lived in Dome City! So now it's not just my generation that would be gone, but the generation AFTER me would be gone, too!

I'm rather surprised you have seen this movie, Syd. It's seldom known by anyone under 40. I was 8 when it came out in theaters, but I didn't see it then. I saw it when I was 9 when it was on TV. A friend of mine had a VCR (another thing which has gone beyond Last Day) and taped it, so we watched it a lot.

I confess I had one HELLUVA crush on Farrah Fawcet, in spite of her having like a five minute role. It's strange, because now blond hair and blue eyes are my LEAST favorite combination.

@Bluemax My dad was a fan of the movie (and possibly of Farah Fawcet--- though he never would have said in front of my mom). We watched it when I was 12 or so. I think my sister bought it as an adult.
If I recall correctly they did a similar theme in the movie the island.

I saw Spock's Death in 1982 and it was shocking and we were all upset, but witnessing the death of Vader in 1983 was also equally shocking - for one thing, it was the first time we ever saw Vader without the mask.

I saw Star Trek II on the first showing of the first day in June 1982.

You know, back in 1982, the rumor was that Spock was going to die, so it was not that much of a surprise when he did. It was still a very emotional scene.

But, in 1983, in "Return of the Jedi" (originally titled "Revenge of the Jedi" before release), Vader's death wasn't rumored. It might have been a bit suspected because we knew that this movie was going to be the last of the original trilogy. There was no guarantee of two additional trilogies although they were rumored. It was a magnificent movie - especially when it came out and had state of the art special effects at the time. But Vader's death, like Roy's death in Blade Runner and Spock's death and even HAL's death, are classic moments. Vader's death is really special though. Unfortunately, when they re-released the movie when they started the second trilogy, they replaced the "Force Ghost" of Vader from the original actor scene in this video to the young Anakin version. That's bullshit and ruined the movie and, worse, disrespected the late actor, Sebastian Shaw, who played the older Vader that dies.

I can't help but think of some other Tom Hanks' related deaths.

This second "death" is not a death, per se, but a living death that, in "Cast Away", Tom Hank's character "Chuck Noland" must go through about permanently losing the love of his life - twice - and yet he still must go on.

This is not a death, but the day before... It is the confessional speech that Tom Hanks' "Paul Edgecomb" gives to "John Coffey" in "The Green Mile", the night before John's execution. Another Academy Award Hanks should have gotten.

In "Braveheart", there are many memorable deaths.

First is the unceremonious death of Wallace's wife, Murron, as an she is made an example.

One of the greatest movie deaths is the death of "Richard Collier" in "Somewhere In Time".
Some consider this movie the greatest romance movie ever made and Christopher Reeve as Collier shows exactly what it is like for a male to have a broken heart which is exactly what kills him in this film.

For context, he is a playright in 1980 and he visits The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan. There, he sees and becomes obsessed with the Elise McKenna who was an actress who starred in a play on the island in 1912. After that night, she never acted again... Collier becomes obsessed with time travel and he is able to self-hypnotically do that - he returns to 1912 when she is there. They fall in love but he accidentally pulls out a penny with the date of 1979 on it and it breaks his hypnotic trance. He disappears from her life forever... and, try as he might, he can't get back. Thus his broken heart...

Deep Blue Sea - Samuel L Jackson.
General Grievous - Star Wars prequels.
The Mask - The Mask is doing the hammy "Western" sad death scene... bad coughing, and then suddenly the crowd erupts in applause, he gets an award, makes a quick speech, and tries to walk "off stage." It's fourth wall breaking, and it's great.
Investigator Arbogast; Psycho - for some reason. I don't think it's played for laughs, and the shot is pretty cool storytelling, for the limits back then... but while it's not a big guffaw, it's like... the weirdness of the shot strikes me as a bit funny. I suppose it's a bit of nervous laughter or something in there.

But... if you want "serious" death scenes...

No spoilers for this one, as it's still pretty new: Avengers; Endgame (or Spider-man Far from Home). You know the one, if you've seen it. Enough said.

Chestbursting scene - Alien. John Hurt's character.
Yodas confession and death in Return of the Jedi.
It's been mentioned, but... Roy Batty - Blade Runner. Great monologue. Quiet death scene. Kinda of dignified. Battle's done.

Psycho - Marion Crane. You don't see any contact with the stabbing. It's in your head. Back then, when not everyone had access to storyline without seeing the film, or when it's been parodied to death (pardon the pun), to everyone, it seemed so sudden, if you didn't read the book before, so it was a huge surprise to most at the time. It was a bit senseless. Yeah, she was in the middle of committing a crime, and she had been in an affair, so she wasn't completely innocent, but the killer had no idea. It wasn't a botched robbery, she hadn't done anything to the killer. She's pretty vulnerable when it happens. It's horror movie trope before it was a horror movie trope.

I grew up with high Jackmans wolverine. I had a deep connection to the character. It really was painful to see him die. But they wrote it so well.

I feel bad for whatever actor takes the wolverine roll next because outdoing Hugh Jackman is a tall order.

When Wolverine cried, those were real tears from Jackman. He was very personally moved by the idea of saying goodbye to his character.
He sounds like a super nice guy. Everyone in the industry says he’s so nice and genuine.

Its just so dignified.

He does the right thing by mercy killing the rebel knowing that Captain Vidal will kill him for it.

He then proceeds to calmly tell the Captain what he thinks of him and his whole ideology with only two lines of poetic dialogue (Fascism, Captain Vidal is a captain in Franco's Army during the war)
And then he calmly walks away and continues walking for a second even after is shot, then collapses to the ground dead.

His death is so incredibly dignified and he manages to get one last perfect fuck you to Captain Vidal

It is an old black and white film "Angels With Dirty Faces" with James Cagney - Quick reprise two friends grew up , one becomes a priest, one becomes a gangster - The priest runs a youth club for boys, the boys idolise the gangster much to the annoyance of the priest - The gangster gets convicted of murder , sentenced to death in the electric chair - The priest goes to see before the execution and says "Die like a coward so the reporters will see it, when they fill the papers with the description of your death , the boys will no longer see you as a hero" - Cagney says "No way I'm a tough guy" but when the execution happens you see Cagney in a shadow scene kicking and screaming , dying ingloriously - You never know if Cagney broke when he saw the chair or was doing what the priest asked.

This is so exquisitely written, directed, acted. In the wrong hands, those words could have seem cliche, but they are perfection. I read all almost 1000 pages of Tolkien's trilogy and revelled in his words. Nobody does this language better.
