Get ready to have your mind blown. The whole thing is a metaphor for progressive politics in the late 19th Century US. Then the issue was the gap between the uber wealthy and the masses. The Robber Barons wanted currency pegged to gold-tight money. Farmers and the working man and Main Street wanted currency pegged to silver which would have increased the money supply. The little guys lost out of course and Republicans (who tightly embraced the Plutocrats) dominated until WWI.
How does this relate to Oz? - 1st) OZ is an abbreviation for ounce which is how gold and silver are measured, 2) the Emerald City-the color is green as in greenbacks; 3) the Yellow Brick Road-um, Gold? 4) The Ruby Slippers-in the book they were not Ruby-they were-you guessed it-Silver! 4) Wicked Witch of the West-western mining interests 5) Wicked Witch of the East-Eastern Bankers who refused loans to small business and farmers 6) Dorothy-of Kansas-average American girl of the era-just trying to get "home"-security, small town America had been battered by the "Panics" which is what they called recessions then 7) Tornado-economic downturns which devastated the average citizen. Just like the tornado destroyed Dorothy's house many lost their houses in these Panics 8) Scarecrow-represents agriculture. He has a brain all the time-he just needs to use it to think and vote intelligently 9) Tin Woodman-Industrial Labor- has a heart which is what he needs to realize his own power and stand up 10) Cowardly Lion-represents the military I think but I've forgotten exactly how. There are many articles out there on this subject-google it. Hope this didn't ruin the movie for you-I found it more interesting after I learned this.

That’s one of the great classics. When I was a kid, I loved it. I only learned a few years ago that Wizard Of Oz was only 1 story in a series of Oz stories, the ruby slippers were made by the witch’s father, but Glinda simply decided to just give them to Dorothy. They were made for the witch’s sister, so the witch really did have a claim to them.
The witch, her sister, and Glinda were once friends in school, but had a falling out as Glinda became more interested in partying and social climbing. There was an entire network of yellow brick roads so the Wizard could move troops quickly.
I loved that movie growing up and watched it everytime it was on tv ( I think I also had it on VHS tape). Toto was my favorite, what can I say I'm a dog person lol.
As far as the munchkins go, they were actual little people whether their voices were really that pitch, I don't know but I imagine they would be. Another thing about the munchkins is, I read once they use to torment Judy Garland during the filming of the movie. I guess they would harass her and go underneath her dress and basically be little creeps. Unfortunately, since this was in the 1930's I imagine Judy just had to deal with it, you know?
Loved it! Great classic, I used to replay it and wished I have the red shoes. I would copy the scene Dorothy tapped her shoes together and said the lines growing up 😆
Last year, there was a live performance in a more modern version at my city. I took my niece to watch it with me as an Aunty&Niece date. She loved it very much! It was quite interesting & amusing. Though I still prefer the classic version.
The little voices, I would think it’s legit because technology may not be as advanced at the time haha.

It's a classic that was ahead of its time. Going from black and white to color during that time was ground breaking. Even now it has a great effect when they do it. The characters are iconic and so are the sayings. There is no place like home and the witch melting from water scene or even the house landing on the witch is parodied and used/referenced in other movies hot shots, gremlins and Casper the movie I think were three
I haven't seen it in 30 years so i barley remember it. But i have seen the other one, with Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell and Ted Ross
I love old movies but The Wizard of Oz is not one of my favorites. I agree that it is was ahead of it's time, the switch from black and white to color is still really cool to me even though it's such a basic special effect. And visually it's a beautiful, I love all the colors. But otherwise I find it kind of boring.
As for the munchkins, I'm not sure. I don't know that they have the technology to change the pitch back then.I’ve actually never watched the actual movie straight up, we just used to do the thing where you start Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon at the second roar of the MGM lion as the movie is about to start, and the music seems to line up with the movie. Entry-level teenage stoner shit you do as a rookie, lmao. So that’s the only way I’ve seen it, and it must’ve been 20+ years ago now.
This movie gives me the creeps. One of the little people hung himself. Dorothy was abused i think the dog died people got poisoned and sick and the munchkins were ex cons and pervs. Omg cast from hell🤯
This movie is very disgusting. They gave the girl who played Dorothy drugs to make her skinnier, in which she got addicted to them. She was body-shamed AND she was only 16! Its also been said that the actors who played the munchkins sexually assaulted and harassed her. The lion costume is made from real lion fur, and on top of that, they used real horses and PAINTED them.
As Wicked Witch Of The West I truly feel for that wonderful woman & it brings tears to my eyes & it saddens me that she was murdered. Dorothy you & your red shining shoes of death can follow the yellow brick road elsewhere.
I love the movie, especially on the big screen. The vibrant colors and special effects were way ahead of anything else in 1939. It’s funny, dramatic, endearing, and scary all at the same time.
It’s a great movie. Although, I’ve never seen The Wiz. The movie gave me nightmares, but overall I loved watching it over and over again. I even made a poster from the movie and was in a parade for my school. I dressed up as a munchkin (costume & all), paraded around the town I lived in and it was awesome. I secretly still have my costume. It reminded me of CandyLand board game just lovely times.
I have grown up watching that movie. I seen that movie a million times and I have never thought of that.
You should watch it again and see if you can find the scene where someone supposedly hung themselves and it was caught on filmThe most amazing thing is how the movie was produced to sync with a pink floyd album that had not yet even been conceptualized.
I love that movie we watch it every year on Thanksgiving after dinner
That movie is great. The musical numbers MAKE the film
I know whenever someone finds out I'm from Kansas the wizard of oz jokes start coming out -_-.
It is a classic though and is a good movie.Among the all-time greatest of films (and directed by the same guy who directed "Gone With the Wind" - and released the same year).
Not sure if those were the real Munchkins' voices. The Wizard of Oz synced with Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon" plus lasers in the Fox Theater and some green stuff ahead of time was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life
When I was a kid that was on tv once a year and me and my 3 sisters were all glued to that little black and white tv we enjoyed it very much and we felt every emotion that dorthy did as well. y favorite the lion but I also really loved that little dog
I would never watch it. Disgusting what happened. Anyone who actually watches the film and don't have a moral issue with watching it is actually pretty messed up.
I have never been able to watch it from start to finish. The songs kill it for me.
As a movie, it was very impressive, at least in a technical sense (far better than the original, at least as far as that goes). As an adaptation, it left something to be desired.
