Do you believe it's okay if Zeus is portrayed as a black man?

The West is an Orwellian shitshow.
How am I supposed to defend this thing? They're rewriting literature and even history to fit the woke narrative. If you went to China to do some artistic representation of their popular Three Kingdoms romance and black washed its characters... Damn, you'd put yourself in real trouble because the Chinese would take it as an offense (which it is).
There's much more sanity in the countries that are labeled as Communist or Autocratic or Theocratic than in the Western Clown World.
So here is the deal. Historic Cultural figures matter. When you do things like this just to appease a demographic in the name of diversity... I mean its disingenuous to me. This is what they mean by killing our hero's, or revisionist history. It is a reflection of a pervasive cultural climate that caters to one population of people to undermine the tenants of a historically significant cultural.

i mean there were black people in ancient greece anyways and technically greek people weren't considered white for a long time either
BUT considering your political point i do get you, there was a whole thing over making cleopatra black when she was actually tanned - with ariel... like i didn't care about race i just cared about the red hair and they ended up making her a ginger anyways lol - with the new thing over rapunzel, aesthetically the brown woman people were fancasting looked SO pretty, like disney pretty, but i do get that people wanted the whole long blonde hair - but i wouldn't say any of the white disney princesses were really influenced by a particular culture, i know they're mostly french or german but there's no real french or german influence, they could've originally been woc and i don't think it would make a difference to the story but with mulan, that's actually set in ancient china, pocahontas was a native American and the whole film is about colonialism, tiana is set in new orleans and meant to showcase black culture, jasmine is literally a middle eastern princess and there's all these hints, you couldn't make jasmine white and have her in the middle east, you can't have a white mulan in china - if there was a person of colour character that could be changed to a white charcter WITHOUT actually changing the plot then it doesn't matter - but i don't get white people's problems with it, okay if you're talking about the hypocrisy of it fine, but if you're talking about REPRESENTATION as if you haven't been represented throughout history lol - also the gender thing... that would be hilarious, imagine a male mulan trying to pass in a women's only army loll
I don’t care.
Jesus is sometimes thought to be a white male with a beard in white robes when in reality it would look like a Middle Eastern darker kinder skin male. Also men were shorter back then so he wouldn’t be a tall figure either.
Zeus was a God, Gods & Goddesses can be darker skin tone. A Mulan-like character can be Indian with Indian background/origin instead of Chinese with Indian themes instead and Aladdin could be whatever male. I just don’t care.
I don’t see skin color, all I see is interesting characters. As long as the character has its strong intentions and great personality, who the f*ck cares?
No, totally not watching it. Disney shareholders are not getting their proper return due to such nonsense. Its a shame that the latest takeover failed. The ought to be a shareholder lawsuit including against the Mutual Fund Managers who supported the current divisive Disney Management who piss away shareholder value.
Nope you should stay true to the historical accuracy or in this case mythological accuracy of the people your portraying.
I also find it annoying because it's apparently racist to replace black characters with white ones but it's perfectly fine to replace white characters even actual historical people with people who weren't their race or ethnicity. What a stupid double standard.
Only if it's Zeus from "Die Hard With A Vengeance"
But in all seriousness, I think it's kind of stupid. Why would Zeus be black, if Zeus was Greek. Why would Mulan be an Indian girl if she was a Chinese?
I think anyone who needs to steal and appropriate characters from other cultures has an inferiority complex and is insecure, because they don't have anything to be proud of themselves. I don't understand why they can't make their own characters. But Indians have no reason to appropriate Mulan, as they have so many of their own characters and historical/mythical figures to be proud of.
It seems it's only black people who need to steal and appropriate White characters, because they have nothing to be proud of themselves.
In the case of Tonto though, they probably just couldn't find an indigenous actor to play the part, but they weren't trying to completely reinvent the character like they did with Ariel for example.
Tonto was still Native American in the movie even though he was being played by a White guy, but Ariel was straight up blackified.
Well, first of all, obviously, Zeus should only be played by a swan. We know that.
…but why (other than race baiting) would you think that God needs to have a white complexion if he takes a human form?
Oh, right, because of your desire to sow discord. Never mind. I get it.
I am not okay with that, that's why I don't watch the rings of power, that shit is too woke.
I’ve mixed feelings.
On the one hand, I really couldn’t care less.
On the other, if people are going to complain if white actors play non-white roles, then what’s good for the goose MUST also be good for the gander.
The gods can take any form they want, so I don't see what the big deal is.
@normalice. So in your money, Disney is God.
How is Zeus historically described? Does he appear differently every time (something that obviously would have been discussed), or does he have a consistent appearance? And what IS that appearance?
Does this mean that Mayan gods, or Indian gods, or African gods can be depicted by white men - or, hell, by white women? Would China or Japan or Muslim countries be fine with their gods being depicted by a white man or woman? No? Why not? Gods can take on any appearance, right?
@MrOracle the "history" of Zeus is fiction. As with all the other gods. Sure, they can be white. Or black. Or Asian. It really doesn't matter so long as the writing is good and the actors are competent. The question isn't asking "is Greece okay with Zeus being depicted as a black man?" It is asking if I am. And i simply can't care about religious stories beyond their entertainment value.
All that said, I'm unlikely to watch it, so 🤷
In terms of fictional characters, it matters not at all. When you get into true stories, or even historical fiction, i think details matter.
It doesn't matter to me because it's all just acting. But I realize that's an unpopular opinion and I'm supposed to be offended by everything now. Zeus was Greek so he may have been quite dark skinned anyway.
not fair t latino. Disney hurt other minorities
Zeus took the form of a swan and a bull, so why can't he take the form of a black man?
So he can't change form?
He's a MYTH. Do people still worship him? Is he still culturally important to Greece?
It's not like they're portraying Diocletian or Pericles with a black person.
@Paul_in_Indy And you don't understand the concepts of history and culture.
@CALIGVLA Let me refer you back to the concept of God. I think I DO understand that you consider “history and culture” to be your privilege of defining things to look and feel comfortable to you —AND you enjoy trying to tell other people that they should be uncomfortable if you aren’t coddled. Something like that. It’s nonsensical, so I won’t think about it too hard.
You have done your race baiting. Everyone saw you beat your chest and be white and powerful. Move on. You made your point.
In Die Hard 3 Samuel L. Jackson played Zeus so I guess its okay.
Anyone that is okay with it is racist.
I am straining to wonder why I should care.
Not everything needs to be historically accurate.
True - but why is it that only white Christian Europeans need to be race-swapped, and no one else? And it's not like it's one project out of a thousand - it's like 60% of all new media made today. And when they aren't race-swapped, they're gender-swapped, or made LGBT. Again, this is ONLY affecting white Christian Europeans, and mostly men at that.
When Hollywood starts casting white people in historically black roles, then I'll buy this "it's the best actor" or "they can take any form." But when it's always unilateral, it's clear that it's being done for a political agenda. The fact that they come right out and SAY that it's being done for a political agenda is also kind of a clue.
I’m guessing you also had an issue with the live action Disney’s Little Mermaid, because Andersen happened to be Danish.
@RedInnocent69 I did. The story of the little mermaid was written by Hans Christian Andersen and she was of Danish origin in his original version. Disney then adapted the character to have red hair and changed the plot a little to be more children-friendly. And now they made her into a black woman, which is absolutely ridiculous.
If you or I was to write a novel and describe the physical traits of characters in it, then have someone change those traits entirely to fit whatever inclusive agenda is going on nowadays, would you not be upset?
I'm sick of all the woke nonsense nowadays and soon any character will be allowed to be anything. The Kraken will be a vegetable in the ocean. Santa will be a Mayan warrior. Mulan will be Indian.
No appreciation of high art. Probably never even watched Winne the Pooh: Blood and Honey.
It may surprise you that Romeo and Juliet were Arab until Shakespeare rewrote it. And Santa is Turkish. Seriously, chill the fuck out.
