I'm on team "Fuck Grandpa Joe," the lousy scumbag is a freeloader.
Your not the only one
āSupports Amber Heardā killed me š¤£š¤£š¤£šš»šš»
Also didnāt even see āJoe Stalinā OMG!
Grandpa Joe is definitely a character that sparks mixed feelings! While some see him as a symbol of hope and adventure when he jumps out of bed to accompany Charlie, others are frustrated by his previous inactivity. The "tobacco money" detail doesn't help his case either. 🎩 Interestingly, he's a figure who ignites discussions about responsibility and the challenges faced by Charlie's family.

Grandpa Joeās interpretation was a product of his time in the 70ās. For the audience then, he was a perfectly lovable, cheerful man who just wanted to share a love of sweets with his grandson in their unfortunate circumstances as he was made to be cared for by his child and in-law.
Yeah it was literally a plot device, without it Charlie wouldnāt have bought the chocolate bar giving his family endless riches & happiness.
No, don't be daft, he was a retired soldier with depression, and bad legs.
During that era, you only had two options for old vets : keep them at home out the way, or lock them up in asylums for doctors to experiment on.
So in essence, he's among the positives in the book. As he didn't turn into a wife beating, drunkard as most retried soldiers do. But also, took initiative for "one last adventure" when the opportunity presented itself.
This is correct. Post-war soldiers were largely left to fend for themselves, and most people didn't have the luxury of shipping their old and ailing relatives to a nursing home to make them someone else's problem. Instead, you took them in and cared for them yourself.
It's easy to judge someone without having walked in their shoes. People watching the movie when it was released would have implied the context without it needing to be mentioned, as it was a common situation for people in the early 70s to be caring for WWII vets who had come home physically and mentally broken, and then worked a physical job for years until they no longer could.
The fact that he didn't drink himself to death makes him among the more successful of those vets. There was very little understanding of mental health at the time also, unlike today, where that's recognized as a big deal.
I donāt get shitting on Wonka or Slugworth or Grandpa Joe tbh. It is a kidās movie that will always bring a smile to my face when I watch.
I do like to make jokes about Wonka & all however when all is said and done I love this movie and the characters.
Iām not defending the addiction, staying in bed 20 years, not contributing to the family, etc. what I am saying is the movie is awesome & I simply do not care enough to inspect every last detail. Though to each their own.

Grandpa Joe wasnāt the only one in bed.
Go watch dead And buried. He plays a really creepy mortician. It was his last film role. You'll never see grampa Joe the same way again. It's a really creepy movie.
I havenāt seen that movie for a while but when you put it that way! Grandpa Joe is a douchebag 🤣
Necessary character in the development of the story.
He was learning to walk in the golden ticket song.
You can clearly see how unsteady he was on his feet.
They can't make learn how to walk in the whole movie.
I was like six when I saw it that it never occurred to me.
He's a lazy fuck
I've never watched that.
People take silly movies too seriously.
Lazy bum.
