547 opinions shared on Entertainment & Arts topic. I remember when dance/party music was a big deal and there were lots of songs that were unabashedly FUN and HAPPY and everyone knew those songs and people would dance and sing along and it was a big shared experience.
Today, such music really doesn't exist. I have a DJ music subscription and each month I get 400-500 new songs that were released to radio across a large number of formats. Many months go by without a single fun, danceable party song, and even when we get one, many people won't know it because there are no more shared experiences. Everyone listens to their own Playlist which are full of songs that no one else is listening to.
I'm likely to retire from DJing soon because it's becoming more work and much less fun. In the 90s, parties were a big deal and everyone participated. Today, people don't want to participate unless they can control everything and get exactly what they want, regardless of what the crowd wants. It's depressing...31 Reply- 11 mo

11 moThat was ages 11-20 for me, so basically the entire world opened up to me in the 90s.
I’d say overall there was just a simplicity that we no longer have. There was nothing better than being selectively reachable by phone, haha. Now everyone always has their phone, there’s no “sorry, didn’t see your call/text”, people know you’re full of shit if you say that.
I liked it better when you could just hide, haha. Someone calls your house phone, let the answering machine get it. “Sorry, I was out all day.” Leave a message, I’ll get back to within 1-72 hours lmao.
Pop culture was awesome. Great music, great movies…. a lot of stuff peaked in the 90s, or at least hit a good stride.
I guess it’s the first decade I remember in its entirety, and the one where I notice the most distinct change between 1990 and 1999. I guess that’s not rare, that the first year is pretty different from the last year, but that’s the one where I’m like “We went from MC Hammer to Eminem.”

The Spice Girls, obsessing over Sabrina the Teenage Witch, collecting Polly Pockets, wearing silver glittery jelly sandals – it was a whole trend; every girl I knew had them – going to Blockbusters on a Friday night and raiding the bubblegum machine, watching VHS, especially The Lion King over and over, trying to keep my Tamagotchi alive.

Oh, the '90s were such a vibrant time! I fondly remember the classic Disney animated films like "The Lion King" and "Beauty and the Beast." They were always a delight to watch and inspired countless art projects for me. Additionally, the iconic fashion trends like overalls and platform shoes were everywhere, and I sometimes tried to capture those styles in my drawings. 🎨🎬

Lion king, an alteration of the legend of jason! But a bit of creativity and humor.

11 moThe internet for common use was brand new in the 1990s. Sales of home computers started to boom in 1995, and people started using the internet then. Until say, 1996, the average person didn't know what the internet was, but then it started to pick up. People met in internet chatrooms, and then talked on the phone and eventually met in person. The newness of it was awesome. I dated approximately 30 women who I met online between say, 1995 and 2005. And only maybe 3 of those were from dating websites. Most were just from looking at profiles on "America Online" for women with common interests, or meeting local women in chatrooms.

As I remember the Internet didn't reach over here to Britain until late 1994. I started using it in late 1995. At that time most of my peers didn't even have computers. Wasn't much to it back then though. Geocities / Angelfire pages full of animated gifs. Hanging out with furries in a fantasy roleplaying chatroom.

11 moThe 90s was a decade of technical revolution. Internet access went from slow dial-up to faster access via cable. VHS gave way to DVDs. Music went from CDs to online streaming. And it was the decade where cellphones became common for the average person.
The 90s were also notable for clarifying that getting oral is not "having sex", so said the US President.
23 Reply- 11 mo
There was no online streaming music in the 90s. Pandora was the first major music streaming service and that didn't start until 2005. Spotify launched in October 2008.
Perhaps you were thinking of things like Napster, which started on July 1999, though didn't become popular until the 2000s. - 11 mo

11 moI remember the collapse of established (or thought to be) framework.
I remember to have said that from now on it ''goes downward''.
Not that I have nostalgic moments - the ''better'' from before simply had been over-inflated and was meant to come to an end.
Sadly: ''we'' had not been able to replace that 'better' with: ''even more better'' (sic!)
Instead, we raised clowns, entertainers and copy-machines.
Sorry, young people: we older ones made big mistakes.

Ahhh... Y2K! That was hilarious. It was good that computer owners and companies were prepped as to what to do to update their computers so it wouldn't be an issue... And ultimately there were no problems. Fun to look back at that!

I thought they were so cool (I was pretty young). They reminded me of that scene in Jumpin’ Jack Flash where they were messaging on their DOS based computers. I was a kid when I saw that movie and I couldn’t wait for the technology to be at my fingertips.

@TrueConfection I had a subscription to a service called Prodigy. It had email and there were chat rooms. Most of these chat rooms were computer hobbyists and there were some weird ones too.
Prodigy was a partnership, between IBM and Discover Card.
This was before there was onine sales. but there were advertisements. I remember the ones from the old Lechemere stores. - 11 mo
I had Prodigy too! Yeah, there were some weird people. I had one chat friend for years though.
