The Different Types of Siblings

Siblings are people who have one or both parents in common either biologically, through marriage of the parent, or through adoption.

Full siblings

Full siblings share both biological parents in common. All their blood relatives are the same on both sides of the family. Full siblings are more likely to have grew up in the same household and, as a general rule, they are closer than half siblings.

Regular

Regular full siblings share the same biological parents but they’re not twins nor triplets. They were born in different years. They may look alike or they may look different. It depends on the set of genes they inherited during meiosis. This has to be the most common type of sibling.

The Different Types of Siblings

Twins

Twins usually share the same biological parents in common if they were conceived naturally in the bedroom. As a general rule, they are closer than regular full siblings because they were born in the same year and they grew up together.

Fraternal Twins

They are not from the same egg. Before they were conceived, there were two separate eggs in the mom’s fallopian tubes. The dad fertilized both of the eggs (or the eggs were fertilized in a lab by different dads’ sperms) and the twins were conceived during the same time. Fraternal twins can be the same gender and they can also be different genders. One of them might be a girl, boy, or intersex or whatever. They may look like each other because they are the same age and they might've inherited the same traits, but you can usually tell the difference between them.

Identical Twins

They are from the same fertilized egg, but the fertilized egg divided into two. They look exactly the same, and it's hard to tell the difference between them especially when they dress the same. They have the same biological sex from birth and they usually have the same gender identity.

The Different Types of Siblings

Conjoined twins

They are from the same fertilized egg, but the fertilized egg has not completely divided into two. As a general rule, these are definitely the closest siblings ever. Sometimes they can’t be separated through surgery because one of them might not survive.

The Different Types of Siblings

Triplets/quadruplets/etc.

This case is rare and even more rare when more children are added into the picture. These siblings were conceived in the same womb. They all might be from different fertilized eggs. They all might be from the same fertilized egg (separated by division), but that’s even more rare than being from different fertilized eggs. They all might even be a mix of the two (some fraternal and some identical). There may be a conjoined set included but that’s even more rare for it to happen in a set of triplet/quadruplets/etc. I imagine that triplet/quadruplets/etc. are closer than regular full siblings as well.

Half siblings

Half siblings are siblings who only have one parent in common.

Same mom, but different dads

These siblings are maybe just as close as full siblings because they usually grow up in the same household together. That’s because moms usually have full custody of their children. I noticed that they usually tend to get along better than half siblings who only have the same dad. Like full siblings, they are sure that they are siblings because they know that they came from the same mom.

Same dad, but different moms

I honestly don’t think half siblings who have the same dad are the same thing as half siblings who have the same mom… Assuming that polygamy is not present, half siblings who have different moms usually don’t get to see each other that often and that’s because moms usually get primary custody of their children. Unless the dad has full custody (in some cultures they do), then it is possible for these half siblings to be closer together. But as a general rule, half siblings who have the same dad (but different moms) are the least closest of all. These siblings are most likely going to hate each other because there is competition over the dad and their moms might hate each other, especially if there is a polygamy thing going on… Another problem is that paternal uncertainty (females are always 100% certain of maternity, but males can never be certain of paternity) plays a role in fathers and in these half siblings as well.

Siblings through adoption

These siblings are not related by blood. They are siblings because at least one of them is adopted.

Step siblings

These siblings are not related by blood either but they are step siblings because they are connected through their parents’ relationship.
