HAPPY LETTERS

Letter writing and sending used to be the most common way people used to communicate, how it felt receiving a handwritten letter from someone you love and treasure. Children would write, draw your images of their family and share with their parents. This would give much happiness to the parents. This form of communication created a bond because not many indeed received that.

I remember that time when I first came to Uganda in 2016,it was the first time my dad actually decided to take responsibility of us. He brought us from South Sudan and wanted us to join our step sister in Kampala to school together. I was really confused because I had considered him an uncle. We started schooling in boarding where I was not accustomed to. Things were really difficult, wasn't affluent with the languages, had no friends and our step sister who knew how things work decided to leave us in the boat to row alone.

Slowly, we started getting used, with teachers, having friends. These were our first true friends after losing our friends from our former country, Deborah, Isama, Blessing and others but of all Deborah. Deborah was short and had kiddish behavior, she had a twin brother Derrick. She can easily cry and she had one problem, pooping on herself especially when she had diarrhea. There was something about her that makes me never to forget her, she is kind, and caring. She taught us the languages and helped us with homework, improve our performances.

Our friends had unique behaviors and interests, Isama loved dancing, Blessing was good at mimicking songs , I guess my personal interest now reflect back to my older friends. There was this culture we had, every time before school ends and we go for holidays, we could design letters, with handmade envelopes like we would post them for a pen pal. We could write nice words with neat handwriting thanking our parents and telling them how much we missed them. Although I didnot know much about our dad back then, I still wrote a letter to him. Although my lfirst letter was for our grandparents and siblings back home in South Sudan.

We could also write letters to ourselves and teachers, give it before the school time ends. Slowly I started understanding my dad, although things were not fine, I enjoyed school because I had friends that make me forget about things at home. Being in juniors primary, I had love for writing letters and every holiday that comes, I made sure to come with a letter for my dad and at least received from a friend. I kept writing to my dad until senior primary where I had changed school from my previous school, we had moved to a new area and dad decided that we attended a school near home although in boarding again.

One time we talked about our letters, dad said he still had them, we felt really happy because it was really long since we wrote them and I thought he really read them because those days, dad was really busy that we rarely had face to face talks so through the letters most time we communicatted to him. Letters are much fun to read especially when someone tries to read romantically to you. You know before these modern way of sending messages to someone far, letters were commonly used among families, businesses, couples and more because it was the most accurate and convenient way of sending letters. I still think letters are fun and should be used to convey messages. And no matter how much the world having more technologies that make communication easier, I would still prefer letters more because nowadays, people edite stuffs like birthday wish card and so on, letters show how someone spent their time and did something to make you happy tirelessly.....
