Why is my best friend so overprotective?

One of my male friends gets extremely overprotective of me. He freaks out about every guy from the one who I'm only talking to because I have a project, to the guy that flirts with me just for kicks and giggles, to the guy that I literally call my brother (even though he is not). He keeps telling me that he just doesn't want me to get hurt, but he knows that I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself. When he does see me talking to a guy, he comes over and makes an excuse to pull me into another conversation. I admit, it's kinda cute in a way, but horribly frustrating. What gives?

1) He may be the silent possessive type. This actually is not good, if true. Possession can becone obsession. 2) may have latent or overt feelings for you and is the jealous type. 3) might feel it is necessary to play the role of the "protector."

You know him best and probably can figure out which of these, if any, it might be.
