I've come to the realization you cannot be friends with everyone. Although this sounds shallow I've chosen to not associate with people who have nothing going for themselves meaning no money, no car, no career, no goals, no plans for their future, who are mentally/physically unstable, and can't take constructive criticism.
Here's why! When you're friends with people who have nothing going for themselves like the above I mentioned they tend to envy you because of your success and feel they deserve handouts.
I would not be friends with someone who had nothing going for themselves. I prefer to be around successful goal oriented individuals not the small minded

Nah, that's a pretty shallow assumption. One of my closest friends has zero motivation and constant money problems. Whenever I visit, she let's me stay over, cooks me food, and makes/paints me presents for my birthdays and holidays. She's a childhood friend who is genuinely happy for me and has not asked me for money once. I've only had 2 people ask me for money, but one was an old acquaintance NOT my friend. And another was a disabled veteran who recently just medically retired from the army.
I’d want to be friends with anyone who deserves my friendship not take advantage of it. Idc if they got nothing going on or everything is going on for them. For those who have nothing going on for them, I’d want to encourage them, help them get back up. For those who have everything going well for them, I’d cheer them on and not race with them or get envious with them. Friendship is not about social status or the benefits.
I am friends with a few, but I keep my distance. And I have been tempted more than once to cut them off completely. Lucky for them I'm a compassionate human being. It just irritates me when you give people advice for how to change their habits and get their life together and they refuse to listen to you.
True you can not be friends with everyone but being friendly is an unknowing compromise. You can distance yourself and still be friendly.
If they become envious or jealous, that is something that they will have to overcome. They don't get to make what they are going through your issue.
That's how I've dealt with similar situations in the past.

My opinion might not matter, however, I belive people can be friends with everyone, with the exception that some just aren't as close to you. And with Psychology in play, the friends whom you associate with, are more likely to be more in common with you in terms of personality or even lifestyle.
- I once turned down the opportunity to be friends with a group of girls in elementary, which was sad since it took me two years to try and be friends with them. And when I did, that's when I realized that they were amazing individuals whom I still hang out with today 😄. -
I'm a friend to everyone who personally knows me. However, my tighter inner circle of friends are very much as assertive, ambitious & successful as I am.
Update: I don't think it's naive for people to be friends with others that have nothing going for themselves. For example; You can be a friend of a intellectually disabled person because you are a good person, even though they may not have much going on or won't be successful.
I think most people just used it as the opposite of your other answer. As in, no, they don't have to be successful or goal oriented. Any and everybody, bit hyperbolic, let's not be friends with the local child abuser. But within reasonable standards, anyone who is a good person and is friendly to you, why not.
