My parent did censor themselves in front of us, and I have often thought back on this and wondered how the fuck they did that? None of my relationships worked like that, and I always thought it was supposed to. My ex would criticize me to no end in front of the kids and I never really knew how to respond to it. If I got angry then I was a jerk, when I addressed it in private I was told I was paranoid... if I ignored it then it continued and felt I needed to defend myself in front of the kids or look like a retard all the time.
In the end to this day, I never know how my parents kept everything so private and to a certain degree I wish they hadn't because maybe I would of been better prepared for my bitch of an ex wife.00 Reply

+1 yMy parents are pretty conservative and my mom more than my dad. And I know they censor what they say around us (or, at least me and my youngest brother). But I have heard them a few times and their "vocabulary" changes - LOL. Especially about politics - but more Dad than Mom.
But when my mom and I had "the talk" she was unbelievably open and using terms I knew but NEVER expected to hear from her and - so, yeah, I think parents have a "secret" life or something.
Will I censor myself around my kids? Yes, I think there are a LOT of things little kids don't need to hear. But, once they're like pre-teen and older, you need to start talking to them like the young adults they are (or are becoming) otherwise how will they learn to think for themselves?10 Reply

+1 yMy dad rarely, if ever, swore in front of us. If he did, something really upset him!
Now my mom would swear like a sailor, lol. Mostly when she was upset. The only word she wouldn't say around us is the "f word." Oddly enough, me and my siblings weren't able to swear. My mom threatened to wash my mouth out with that lava soap!
... to this day, I don't swear around my parents. Out of respect and fear 😆10 Reply
So my Mum when she first began to drive was massively nervous, so she let me have days off school whilst I sat in the car with her (remarkably I passed my exams lol). Buy my main memory is my Mum who had never swore before became the most foul mouthed person in the world when driving... but what was truly funny was that rather than a normal swearword she would combine 2 words to make one brilliant swearword. Hence a Tw@t W@nker, C*nt B@stard, F*ck Bellend are some of my favourite phrases of all time lol

+1 yThey did at first, but then they realised they were teaching me more curses that way and that was when they concocted a deranged and incredibly mentally damaging plan to over inflate my five year old ego by saying things like "he's just too smart for his age"
You know, just in case I didn't have enough confidence that my banshee voice could land me a singing career.10 Reply
+1 yYeah they did, but they were so inconsistent that may as well not have done it at all. Lots of crazy fighting growing up so I learned a lot of ways to emotionally hurt someone. Luckily I’m calm as an adult.. but when someone does push me over the edge (very very rarely.. maybe 3-5 times in the last 12 years)… I can emotionally ruin someone who doesn’t have thick skin
10 ReplyIt's kind of a weird one to answer they never really censored themselves but they also never had too. My dad was a pastor when I was growing up and both my mom was religious as well. I didn't grow up in a crazy strict house or anything, but even now that I'm older they never cuss or make wildly inappropriate comments.
10 ReplyNo my parents always spoke there mind but with my daughter I might curse sometimes nothing to bad tho if your feeling some type of way just speak your mind lol aslong it's not out of control nonsense talk I sometimes have to tell my friends to shut up if my daughter around lol but other than that it's not to bad I think lol

m +1 yNope... both of my parents just never used any swear words, and it wasn't a "rule" or censorship of a kind, that's just how they have always been... and I am pretty much the same, I can go weeks without them just because I don't need them... lol

10 Reply 1.6K opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. Nope and I don't do it around my kids either. Bad words just aren't inappropriate to me they are just words and my kids are gonna learn them eventually
20 ReplyAll the bad swear words I learnt from my mother mostly by the age of 8. They didn't care what we heard as children.
I always try and watch what I say around kids.20 Reply
+1 yNone of the adults censored themselves around kids. There really is no point in censoring just because a kid is around. One, they will learn it anyways at some point. Two, if they do not learn it from you in a controlled setting and know when and when not to use curse words, they will learn it from another source and make their own judgment on when THEY choose to use the swear words and that might lead to sticky situations.
00 ReplyMy parents would be screwing while we were in the room. They walked around naked. They would make sex jokes. Fart all the time. My sisters would compare breast sizes often and walk around naked. My brothers would bring home girls and have wild sex. As we got older that stopped happening.

+1 yYes. If they didn’t want me to understand what they were saying they’d just say it in French, Spanish, or creole

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yI don't think there is any need for ridiculous censorship. Censorships do not work, on the contrary, they increase curiosity. For example I've been exposed to a lot of cursing in my life. At school, on the street, among friends, family, relative. But I'm ashamed to curse. I curse/insult myself occasionally, of course, but I'm definitely embarrassed to do so in front of people.

+1 yNo and there’s no reason for any parents to censor themselves, first of all if your kids don’t hear cuss words from you they will hear them regardless and I wouldn’t want my kids to be that one kid who thinks shut up is a bad word at 14
