I’m 25 and I hate going to family events mainly because we have nothing in common and they’re all fake anyway.

I love spending time alone or with friends.

It’s my nieces birthday soon and they’re throwing a party which I refuse to go to. This annoys my parents and they have a go at me saying I shouldn’t act like this towards family and should just show up.

Nobody cares when it’s my birthday anyway. My sibling didn’t even get me a card.

So to answer my question is it wrong for them and should I go?

XD) with your family is important, even if you don't get anything from it at the moment. It is a hassle, it is very boring sometimes, but it is important.
On the other hand, if you have made up your mind and don't want to attend, your parents should understand that and leave you alone, especially if you explained how you feel about those gatherings. They may not like it, but you can decide for yourself when, where and with whom to be social.

Even if they aren't like the perfect family, they are your family after all.

It doesn't mean you have to share other things with them. But I can tell you that having no family to visit is a (way) uglier thing to have.

If your family has treated you badly and not cared about your special days don't go! Don't feel bad about it either. Too many people think you are forced to love and respect your family simply because they're blood. If they treat you bad, they're toxic. You deserve more.

I never was one to attend birthday parties. When we had a large group family dinner I would go. Most times I would eat then find a quiet place to read the paper or sit and just enjoy the day. Over time my family started saying I was snobbish or standoffish. I am today not close to my older sisters. I do speak to my oldest sister from time to time but have not spoken to the next oldest sister for close to 25 years now. When her son stole things out of my home she defended him and basically ended our relationship. Then she wanted me to give her several thousand bucks "just because" I could afford it. Honestly I rather give 5K to a homeless bum than give my sister a dang dime today. This is the same sister I asked for some help back in the early 80s when I was forced to limit my meals to two a day and several of those were things like Ramen Noodles. What I got were crickets. This is why I now live in Virginia. Were you wrong? Only you can answer this question!
