Anyone ever lost a relative or close friend to suicide?

I got a good friend that has really gone off on the deep end and a very dark place for the last month. He has already been involuntarily committed to 72 hour psych evaluation twice in the last month. The medical bills are costing him more money he doesn’t have. He is likely to going to get kicked out of the place he’s renting given his disturbing behavior. He’s really got nowhere to go if that happens. I can’t take him in because I’m a landlord myself and my renters will likely be disturbed to see that. I am also not a professional so I won’t no how to best handle his erratic behavior.

However I’ve tried to be supportive as possible but I haven’t heard from in two days. Tried calling him and my phone call when straight to his VM.

This is tragic because he is acting the polar opposite of the guy I was good friends with for some time. He’s dealing with a situation that’s no joke but he seemingly was ready to own up to it and handle it as best as he can. But that earlier level headed approach seems like it was just him trying to “fake until he makes it”. He’s definitely not making it.

I do not know what to do. I’ve had acquaintances pass away from suicide before but never an actual close friend or relative.

Just got an update that my friend is safe. Currently in a mental health facility.

So my take on this, is you are worrying about something you can’t control. I understand he is your friend and I applaud you for wanting to go above and beyond for him, but I think you are juggling from than your should. Try to check in with him and if he replies ask if he needs anything, but please don’t go finding ways to get him out of this, because it’s probably going to backfire and in the long run of all of this, you are going to end up hurt.

He helped me overcome a bad addiction I had (gambling) and motivated me to improve my life. He was there for me in some of my worst moments.

Also he’s in a position he has very limited options. Although he’s well educated (masters degree) and very smart (public speaker and bilingual) he’s dead broke, in debt, divorced, has no financial assets and has a criminal record because of bad choices he made due to his own gambling addiction (which he quit 3 years ago).

He’s 60. From my observations no one gives a shit about middle aged men in society. White middle aged men have extremely high suicide rates (only 2nd to Native American men). We are expected to have our shit together and if we fail its only because we choose to hence who cares.

Anyway your right about this being out of my control. But to a more limited extent (being 40) I am starting to understand more and more how no one gives a shit. It forces men to be independent which is good to a certain extent but it also backfires when things go wrong.

My paternal, paternal, maternal great grandmother's sister killed herself, but that was almost 50 years before I was born so no one close.
