This guy who has been an acquaintance for a while has turned more into a friend over the past year or so. We have gotten to know each other a lot better and talk more often. My birthday just passed and he bought me a present. I really didn’t expect it whatsoever and I am generally awkward when receiving gifts to begin with. I just said “oh thanks, you didn’t have to get me anything” and then looked at it a bit before setting it down. Now that the moment has passed I feel guilty like I didn’t show enough gratitude in my response. Should I text him to thank him again? If so, should I apologize for not reacting as well in the first place? I know this seems like a dumb question to some people but I’m awkward so… I need help.
It's thoughtful of you to want to express gratitude for the birthday present you received. While it's not necessary to apologize for your initial reaction, reaching out to thank him again is a kind gesture. It shows that you appreciate his thoughtfulness and that his gift meant something to you.
You can send him a text expressing your gratitude and mention how much you appreciate the gesture. You could say something like, "Hey [Friend's Name], I just wanted to reach out and say thank you again for the birthday gift. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness, and it meant a lot to me. Sorry if I seemed a bit awkward when I received it initially. I wanted you to know how grateful I am. Thanks again!"
Remember, it's never too late to show gratitude and express appreciation. Your friend will likely appreciate the gesture and be happy to know that his gift was well-received.

Doing overthink this. You can thank him again if you feel like it.
Just thank him again when you see him. It’s a gift on your birthday, not some random gesture so there’s no need to be excessive.
