Would it "ruin Christmas" if someone got your child a gift not typical of their gender?

I saw a post somewhere where a mom was complaining about a relative getting her son a makeup kit—which he had specifically asked for—because she thought it would ruin the whole day with extended family when he unwrapped it.

It made me think because something similar happened in our family once, when one of my girl cousins picked a set of legos during a gift-exchange game. Her mom tried to make her trade it with me because I was the only young boy there and I'd ended up with something boring like a candle or a blanket, but she didn't want to, so I pretended to really like what I'd got so she couldn't trade with me.

It was fine when she picked the legos. A couple of people made jokes, but nobody was upset about it, they just thought it was funny. It was only when her mom started acting like she'd done something wrong that things got awkward. I don't think anyone would have been uncomfortable if she had just let her daughter keep it and not made a big deal about it.
