If your best friend differed in politics & religion would you still be friends? Am I wrong that I didn't say how I felt?

My best friend has a very different view of mine on the politics side. But I love her as a person, she is my childhood friend. I respect but disagree in what she believes. She is not politics and there is so much more to her that I value and love.

I did not share my opinion in the worry that we would argue.

Was I wrong?

Depends.

I'm quite progressive. If someone was blatantly anti-LGBTQ , anti-abortion, anti-labour movement, then we have no reason to be friends. Our values are too different and I'm not into justifying myself to someone with incompatible values. Nevermind having a relationship with them.

If they're normal and reasonable, though, and just vote for another party than me, that's fine.

Religion is the same. If they're able to respect my atheism/agnosticism, and not try to force their religion on me or others, then that's fine.

But generally I don't keep friends with such different values. They don't add anything to my life and actively detract from it.

If we ever got into an argument probably. I wouldn’t like to talk with someone who has strong views on immigration because… I’m a minority. But on other topics? Maybe.


One of my closest friends is a Republican and I’m liberal. We never discuss politics because I don’t care and neither does she. So, I guess… who cares.

I have a friend who voted for Brexit. We don't talk about it. I'm sure he realizes now that he made a mistake.

I've had friends who were Sikhs and Catholics. There's no need for friends to talk about politics or religion, which are boring topics anyway.

For me that would simply mean avoiding those topics. I dont share the exact same political views as my best friend but its not the complete opposite either.

Same with religion, my ex was actually religious and I let her do her thing and she didn't bother me with it. Sometimes I would go with her to some events, if it made her happy.

Most of my friends share different political views than I. It works because we largely steer clear of the topic but when it does come up we listen but disagree. I however can't be friends with someone who turns every little thing into a political rant.

My best friend And I DO differ in almost every political opinion. Also while I'm a catholic, she's an atheist ( she says she is but there a huge undertone of Wiccan there). But she's a wonderful person, kind to a fault, and dependable.

From my exoeriences no matter what we say about it religious and political views actually effects our relationship cuz they are parts of us and your best friend denies a part of you by denying them.
