My parents think it's stupid for me to help others, what's wrong with helping others?

My own parents and others in the family criticized me whenever I decide to help others. They think I should only be focusing on helping my family, not others. I'm already supportive with my family and close friends. Sometimes I still have additional time to help others. Another thing my parents keep asking me is this ''But seriously who gives you money anyways''. No one but I just like helping when I have a chance too.

For instance I gave donation to some lady whose child had cancer. No one in my family has an illnesses and I have no first hand experience either. I just happened to be available and if it's in my hands to help someone at that moment, why not?

My parents and those criticizing me remind of the people that couldn't care less if something happens to others but suddenly care if it happened to them directly then they would create a foundating, asking others to help so it doesn't happen to others. What's so bad about helping random people?

They all think it's none of my business and to let others solve their own issues. But if I can help out at that moment and maybe make a difference to that person (maybe they needed that bit of money for an important surgery or something and I just happen to be there at that moment)... why not?

Helping others is what normal, decent people do. It seems to me you need much better parents. They seem to be selfish, self-centred and immature, not to mention amoral and verging on sociopathic. Don't listen to any of their bad advice; do what you believe to be right.

My mom is the same way, and her reasoning is justified. Helping too much and being too nice, will only get you taken advantage of, and make you the bad guy the one time you DON'T help. I know from experience. I think small gestures of decent courtesy are fine, but you don't want to do too much.

When they say they rather you help your family over others is kinda dumb logic. But I will say if you are neglecting yourself then you should not be so eager in helping others. It's also good to keep in mind that depending on the kind of help your giving, you at some point will prob be taken advantage of

I don't blame them, honestly. Helping others too much, especially strangers will only get you taken advantage of. I think some small gestures are just common courtesy and those are fine, but I agree with them about the cancer patient. What do YOU care?

For a moment I imagine placing myself In their shoes and thinking about their what their goals would've been, their dreams, everything shattered.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with helping others just always be cautious that you yourself don't get used.

Yes I know there are lots of dishonest people. I tend to help real cases of those in need. For instance if I see on the news about a toddler that got burned in a kitchen accident and the parents doing a foundating for the child's recovery, I imagine myself in tears over the child and help them.

Whenever I have a chance or there is a news that greatly impacted me (for instance hearing about a toddler that got burned and the parents asking for donation for his recovery) to the point of tears, I will tend to help.
