Why some parents buy electronics to their kids and not surprised their kids content?

I always make my 9 year old niece put her phone or tablet on top of the kitchen counter. Last time when we were at a family gathering I catch my niece prank calling people. My sister got angry at me for putting away her daughters electronic devices when her daughtercoms over. As I believeshe should be interactingand playing with other kids. while shebpay I check my niece tablet all I found was a bunch of make up tutorials I am very madat my sister for allowing this behavior. I told my sister if your daughter is maing prank calls on her phone that behavior is enough prove that she isn't ready to handle the responsibility of owning a phone. My sister complains that I over reacted how she isn't going to invaid her kids privacy. She is really young my niece needs She allowes her daughter social media 24 / 7 . That is not okay on my book. I bought my kids dvd portables and only on Friday one hour only. Am I the only here who thinks this way?

My son is 5 and has an Amazon tablet. What he can view is strictly regulated on Netflix and YouTube. If he tries to sneak around it, he loses the access for 24 hours. Nothing before school and he has friends over or goes to his friends homes at weekends during the day with the same rules: no TV or electronics during daylight.

As a result he was climbing trees 30' off the ground aged 3.5 and scaring the crap out of me doing it! He's got a trampoline his grandmothers gave him and I'm currently helping him build a fort out of pallets - bonus, it strengthens the boundary fence!

I'm Gen-X so I'm trying to encourage him to do what I loved at his age. Fortunately his best friends fathers' - although mostly the age of my best mate's son - share my passion. Hoping to do a guy's camping weekend next spring (Southern Hemisphere, so September/October) but need a firearms license for safety in the wild here - big cats etc fairly local and less than friendly. Should be fun though.

Your parents skills are excellent. I wish more parents had your same mentality. All those activities are fun and your son will remember the memories.

I'm not convinced they're excellent. I just want him to get the same kind of childhood I had before tech got hold of everything and "health and safety" replaced "what's the worst that can happen if..." for playground activities (and surfaces)

Biggest problem at the moment is my son doesn't believe in strangers - just friends he hasn't met yet 🤦

Parents that get their kids a smart phone are guilty of child abuse or at the very least neglect. Elementary age kids watch porn and are influenced by lots of bad things online when unsupervised and parents are the ones enabling it. There is no legitimate reason for someone that isn't an adult to need as mart phone, and even for adults, it isn't actually necessary either.

I seriously don’t think the electronics in general are healthy for young kids. It really adversely affects their social development and there’s just too much bad stuff out there they don’t need to see.

I think kids should not have e smartphones until after high school. I had one cell phone that my dad's shared. It stayed in the car and was only to ve used in emergencies.
